there appears to be move to have the FDA make one of the statin drugs an over the counter non prescription drug. the family of statin drugs are used to lower cholostral.

a few years ago the FDA made a chinese tea that had been used for several thousand years illegal. it seems that the tea had some of the same chemical compounds that make up the statin drugs. apparently the chinese knew something several thousand years ago that modern science only recently discovered. the amount of the statin similar drug in the tea was miniscule and may have lowered cholesterol, no formal studies were ever done. however the tea never did any damage.

statin drugs work by shutting down the liver's ability to make the cholesterol. the side effect can be very dangerous. it affects the muscles. anyone taking statin drugs needs to be tested periodically to determine if the liver is being damaged.

opening up the statin drugs to consumer use without testing is tantamount to possibly causing death because of loss of liver function.

there is another drug on the market called zetia that does not affect the liver, it prevents the body from absorbing the cholesterol and the cholesterol is discarded as waste. there doesn't appear to be any side affects.

when i took lipitor, the best known and most effective statin drug, i lost muscle tension. i could barely walk and i couldn't lift a gallon of milk. my cardiologist took me off the drug and put me on zetia.

my cholesterol went from 240 to 164.

if you want any info re the zetia,

Feds move 3 ways to restart anthrax vaccine program
One strategy has FDA meeting judge’s ruling

By Deborah Funk
Times staff writer

The government is using a three-pronged approach to try to reinstate the military’s anthrax vaccination program, which the Pentagon says is needed to protect service members who face a “heightened” risk of attack from the potential biological weapon.
In the latest move, the Food and Drug Administration is now seeking public comment on the information it relied upon to declare that anthrax vaccine was effective against all forms of the disease — something a federal judge in October said the FDA previously had failed to do.

The Dec. 29 notice published in the Federal Register gives the public 90 days to comment on the FDA’s proposed rule on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine as protection against anthrax.

The FDA proposes that the vaccine be indicated to protect against all forms of anthrax, to include both the skin form of the disease and also inhalation anthrax, the type defense officials say could be used as a weapon.

The FDA acknowledged in its notice that the current vaccine is not the same one used in human tests done more than 40 years ago. That vaccine was obtained from a researcher at Fort Detrick, Md., and its manufacturing process has changed several times since then, as has the manufacturer.

Even so, the FDA said it has reviewed the vaccine’s historical development and found that the Pentagon has had “continuous involvement with, and intimate knowledge of,” the formulation and manufacturing processes of the various versions of the vaccine over the years.

That, the FDA said, is enough to make a determination that the current vaccine is comparable to the original vaccine, a conclusion backed up by animal tests.

Chicago attorney John J. Michels Jr., who represents six anonymous service members and civilian defense employees who sued the government and shut down the Pentagon’s mandatory vaccination program, took issue with the FDA’s position.

Among other things, he questioned how the FDA could apply the human study results of the original vaccine to one that is now in its fourth version.

He also said the vaccine was not properly licensed in 1970 because the licensing agency at the time failed to account for the fact that the manufacturing process had changed since the human study was done. Also, the test results combined cases of skin and inhalation anthrax, even when there were too few inhalation cases to statistically prove whether the vaccine was effective against that form of the disease, Michels said.

The Defense Department also is forming two other lines of attack to try to reinstate its mandatory anthrax vaccine program.

On behalf of the Pentagon and the Department of Health and Human Services, the Justice Department is appealing the federal judge’s October decision that the anthrax vaccine was not licensed for inhalation anthrax, and therefore could not be forced on troops without their consent.

Outside the court system, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has asked the Health and Human Services secretary to allow the Pentagon to administer the vaccine under the “emergency use authority” of a law passed last year called Project BioShield.

The law says that, to the extent practicable, vaccines should be used under Project BioShield with the consent of those who are to be inoculated.

Defense officials have not said whether they plan to seek authority to make the anthrax vaccine mandatory for service members under their Project BioShield request.

In a written response to questions, defense officials said only that “specific details on program resumption are being discussed” with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Sorry for the Threadjack, but this is the same type actions by the FDA happening with many other medications/Vaccinations...

another good read... From a Dr. Meryl Nass

http://www.milvacs.org/fdacom~1.doc

Dr. Meryl Nass

Leaders Speak Out
http://www.milvacs.org/Quotes/
Presidential Candidate George W. Bush, US Medicine. Sep. 2000:
"The Defense Department's Anthrax Immunization Program has raised numerous health concerns and caused fear among the individuals whose lives it touches. I don't feel the [Clinton] administration's anthrax immunization program has taken into account the effect of this program on the soldiers in our military and their families. Under my administration, soldiers and their families will be taken into consideration."
(where are we now Mr. President? and why haven't you spoke out since this Presidential Bid? and said enough is enough?)

Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, Pentagon News Briefings, October 25, 2001:
Q: Are you taking the anthrax vaccine, Mr. Secretary?
Secretary Rumsfeld: No.
Q: You're not being inoculated; you're not taking a series.
Secretary Rumsfeld: No. No.
Q: All right. No vaccine.
Secretary Rumsfeld: No, no, no.

Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, Pentagon News Briefings, October 28, 2001:
Q: Okay. Mr. Secretary, have you been vaccinated against anthrax?
Secretary Rumsfeld: No. Have you?
(so Our Leaders are above being part of the Vaccination process they want and have been spending 5.6 billion to vaccinate the entire US Population with some Vaccine they themselves will not get?)"whatever happened to lead by example?"

(Even our own elected Officials will not be vaccinated against the threat of the Anthrax at which these members of Congress were subjected to... but yet it is good enough for the soldiers and possibly the American Public? )
Sen. Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader, CNN. Dec. 18, 2001:
"The vaccine is a dated vaccine, it's an old vaccine. There are very real and potentially serious side effects from the vaccine and anyone who elects to receive the vaccine needs to be made aware of that. I do not recommend widespread inoculation for people with the vaccine in the Hart Building ...There are too many side effects and if there is limited chance of exposure the side effects would far outweigh any potential advantage."

Yep there is defenantly something going wrong in our Federal System today... there are many more quotes on the site listed above... I'm not going to list them all but will finish with one more...

Mr. Ross Perot, January 24, 2002, testimony to the Congress:
"We're not ready, and the sooner we start, the sooner we finish. For example, on anthrax, which is--you're not going to get it done in BioPort. You are going to take care of some of these buddies. I said all I want to know is who are the investors. Nobody will tell me who are the investors in BioPort. That sounds off a big bell in my head. ... And no matter how much damage this shot does, and believe me, I have talked to all the Tigers that have been damaged, there is a group of Air Force officers who have taken this as a major mission. They had to get out of the Air Force, but, boy oh boy, they are all over it for their friends, and the medical data they have pulled together are overwhelming. It's the kind of information you keep reaching for. They just pull together everything that's been done."

Everyone can step up... you don't have to be a Soldier or in the Military to inquire to your elected officials with questions and concerns and help get and keep America and it's people focused and on the right tracks!!!

Rick: Check out the latest issue of US Snooze. There's a good article about Statin lowering drugs. The gist of it is that lowering cholesterol is good, but lowering cholesterol and lowering a certain blood protein is far better. There may be something on the US News website; I read the paper version.

from your site

The application was filed by Johnson & Johnson-Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Co., a joint venture set up to market over-the-counter versions of drugs with expiring patents.

The companies said in a statement they were disappointed by the decision but encouraged by the discussion and would work with the FDA toward getting the drug sold without prescription.

"We continue to believe in the benefits of Mevacor … as an over-the-counter medication to help lower cholesterol and contribute to improved overall public health," said spokesman Tony Plohoros.

tony is a drug whore.

now if the fda will pay more atention to thier advisory board then the drug lobbyists.

Not sure whether the Res-Q company is still in business. Can't find their web site. I was tempted to try it. I take Sears Labs OmegaRx fish oil capsules.

About red yeast rice and some other natural cholesterol reduction substances, see this:

The doctor had me on 'statin' drugs for awhile ... but I just stopped taking them. They can't be that good for a body, even if they do lower cholesterol.

I started taking 250 mg. of Niacin a day (must be taken with food, or flushing will occur), along with Nature Made 'Cholest Off' (which contains plant sterols and stanols)... which lowers cholesterol naturally, that ... and and a diet low in saturated fat and cholestrol.

Works for me ...

good that you found what works for you. i take 1000mg
of niacin twice a day, but i am monitored by the doctor regularly. the flushing is the niacin flowing through your blood. it's doing it's job, but it does make you want to pour ice water on your face.

when women go through menopause, they flush a lot.

most of the cholestrol that shows up in tests is what the liver is putting out plus what residue you have in the blood even after a 16 hour fast.

my cardiologist says the statins are a proven and the zetia is still not documented enough, but i can't tolerate them. zetia it gets my vote.
