i am loading the washing machine and i put in some powder for cleaning the clothes.

i remember the days when we used soap powder and it made bubbles. if you used to much it was all over the floor.

now we use powder. it doesn't bubble. it's just there.

is it possible that the water alone is doing the cleanung and we are being fooled into buying "cleaning powder" that doesn't do anything?

There is truly no short answer to your exhistentialist dillema.

Here's a short version.

Generally speaking, soap suds do not have to be present to “get clothes clean”. Today’s detergents contain chemicals that change the PH of the wash water to allow dirt particles no matter how small to separate from materials. It used to be that they also contained high levels of Ethylene Dyamine Tetra acitate, (EDTA) which did the trick by creating an alkaline solution. Not harmful to the touch of course. Then Tri-sodium Phosphate was added to brighten the whites. One by-product of the combination of mechanical agitation and EDTA/Phosphates was bubbles.

Both EDTA and Phosphates were found to be harmful to the environment, so the formulas had to be changed. Now, the water is made alkaline by proprietary formulas. Rest assured, that for as long as Procter & Gamble has been making detergents they have added inert materials. Fillers. Junk that does absolutely nothing but take up box space and dissolves in water. By removing the fillers and adding just a touch more of the good stuff, they can say their detergent is “Super Concentrated”. More loads per box even though the box is smaller and costs 20% more. Trust me. These guys know what’s going on.

Laundry Musings.....

Why do we need to spend two dollars to dry clean a shirt? Wouldn't it be more economical to donate it to the Salvation Army instead? They'll clean it and put it on a hanger. Next morning you can buy it back for seventy-five cents.

Just what is the washing machine doing during the pause between cycles?

How does stain remover know only to remove the stain?

Why do we wash BATH towels? Aren't we clean when we use them? If not then what was the purpose of the bath?

Should you ever have to launder a washcloth?

Why do they show us how detergents take out bloodstains on your T-shirt? If you've got a T-shirt with bloodstains all over it do they really think laundry is your biggest problem?

Why does coloured soap make white suds?

Do Clothing manufacturers really expect us to run a whole wash for each item marked 'wash separately'?

Is dry cleaning really dry?

Why do we 'hang up' our clothes? Should they not 'hang down'?

Wouldn't it be great if the laundry was self-cleaning - like my cat?

In my humble opinion... if you did not ooze as much **** as you spew outta your mouth... well, this wouldn't be an issue...

I have one of those front load washers that take care of to many suds and sense when the cloths are dry and clean. It even takes care of those nasty stained satin sheets. God Bless America!

They have to add chemicals to make shampoo sudsy. Some years ago one of the shampoo companies tried taking it out and advertising the lower cost, but nobody would buy it.

> Why do we wash BATH towels? Aren't we clean when we use them? Should you ever have to launder a washcloth?

Shouldn't take more than a week or two to find out the answer to that!
