After finishing a couple of honey-do's, Saturday afternoon, I decided to go to Morts (my Sat. afternoon hangout) for a well deserved cigar and ale.

After cleaning up I was almost ready to go when I walked into the living room and found Bailey, our 2 1/2 year old Golden Retriever, finishing off what originally was about 2/3 lb of coffe beans!

Naturally I said a few choice words and knew immediately my afternoon would be spent at the Emergency Vet Clinic. The wife heard me and came up from the basement, I showed her what I found, we called the vet and off we went.

Guys, we knew caffeen (sp) is not good for dogs but we found out as little as 5 ounces can kill even a big dog.

They took her right in and said she will have to stay the night and possibly Sunday night! We drove home and started wondering about our other dog, Sonny. I thought surely not him too, but to be safe we took him to the vet and had them make him vomit. (Since our attempt failed.)

Well, Sonny didn't have any coffee beans in his stomach but Bailey sure did. The receptionist said the operating room smelled like Starbucks!

Luckily she eats like a pig and does not chew her food (she just swallows every thing whole) so the beans were still intact and didn't 'percolate' too much or for very long.

The last thing they told us is her vitals are fine and it was a very good thing that we took her right in. I'm sure she's going to be ok but what an afternoon!

Hope your day was better,
Mike

I had a toy poodle that was smart as **&*, he got in the pantry climbed four shelves and ate a 10lb bag of chocolate chip's from Costco not all but enough to make him so hyped he was up for 2 days the E.R. vet said there was more sugar than coco witch is toxic to a dog but after that I think he was a addict because if we left any out or a Christmas gift under the tree he would sniff it out when we were out and get his fix. He was a little Sh**!

Sorry you had such a bad day. Dogs can drive you crazy sometimes.

My Golden used to eat tons of stuff he shouldn't. He got a pound of chocolate--the good kind of course--off the back of the counter. All that was left was the bag it came in. He was ok but he sure had the runs for a few days. The vet said that milk chocolate isn't as toxic as dark. I guess I should be glad I only like milk chocolate.

He used to also have a liking for pillows and stuffed animals. Not toxic but what a mess he would make.

He died a couple years ago (from cancer). I miss him a lot but I am still not ready for that commitment again. I hope your Golden is ok. They are great dogs.

Gotta love those critters! My mom's friend had a German shepard that was hit by a car. He rejected this plate they had put in his head every year or so--to the tune of $3000 a pop.

Dan, that is one smart poodle.

Rick, I'm talking about the one at Washington and 1st in Wichita, KS. Sorry, would love to hook up with ya for a smoke.

Cigarbidwidow, goldens are great dogs. She loves to play frisbee and swim. She also loves to go fishing with me. At the boat ramp she retrieves her toy from the water. On the water she rides at the front of the boat like a hood ornament! Has to kiss (lick) almost every fish that enters the boat and always lets me know when it is time to head to a sandy beach and retrieve her toy again.

Cigarick, wow!

At home she's a cabinet surfer. We try to keep everything off the counter top. But who would think she would eat coffee beans? Hmmm, she did eat a full container of powdered coffee creamer once. One Summer evening both dogs drank all the grease from a fry grandady that I had just cooked fish in.

The vet told the wife Bailey will be able to come home this afternoon. Sonny can't wait. He's just been laying around not being himself at all!

She's home and seems well. Sonny is back to being himself (humping and wrestling)!!! My pocket book hurts but what the heck..

Retreivers are eatin machines. My last one once ate 4 lbs of fudge and was pretty sick from it.

The worst was when she ate a WHOLE groundhog (fur and fur). She was all bloated so we took her to the vet; in the x-rays, you could see the skull and everything..amazing. We just had to let it run its course. Let me tell you something; if you want to win a farting contest, eat a whole groundhog.

Oh that brings back so many memories. Mine had a liking for rabbits. My cat would actually catch them and take them over to Rusty and he would eat them. It was so funny--great teamwork.

But you are right about the aftermath. Man that dog could make a stench so bad. LOL... Thanks for helping me remember a great dog.

Now I am remembering the chair he ate and the door frame and the... I could go on for hours. LMAO

I am going to show this thread to my daughter. They were born one month apart and grew up together. She used to hand feed him. She could do anything to him--even take bones out of his mouth. He weighed 125 pounds but he was so gentle with her. WOW--I am almost starting to cry. He died a week before her 11th birthday, during the divorce of her parents and selling of her house. It was so sad. She is the one who took it the hardest. She is almost 14 now. What a rough time in a young kids life. (OK, I am crying now)

Sorry to stir up memories Lauren,

The dog I was speaking of died three years ago, and she will never be replaced. I did, however, buy a pup while she was still somewhat healthy so they could get to know each other and learn a bit from each other.

I always had black labs, and they are just awesome with kids. You can take a bone right out of their mouth, pull their ears, poke their eyes.....no problem.
My 3 year old daughter just adores Snoopy (dog's name....not the Charles Schultz beagle), and I am DREADIN that day for her.

That's ok. It was a lot of good memories too. It is funny how some things come back to you.

We had another dog too but they hated each other. It was a mutt and he was never a good dog--he had a nasty streak. The golden got along better with the cat than the other dog.

My ex got the dog, I got the cat. I definately got the better deal.
