Rick,

Did you install the latest upgrade right before the problem? That's what happened to me. Have you tried uninstalling the whole thing and downloading again? I could not tell by your post. I would try that first.

I have been using Real Player and Music Match. Both have been more reliable than Media player.

Good Luck,

Mike

first, use the uninstaller from the control panel directery to remove all traces of windows media player. then use the above link to install a fresh application. if that doesn't solve the problem, then maybe some supporting software, something aside from the application itself, my be corrupt or out of date. lastely, it is probably a REALLY good idea to backup all of the music that you have on the computer. if you have a lot of time and effort invested in the library of tunes then it will be worth the added time, effort and money. if you have to you can just format the hard drive and start from scratch. it is a pain, but even be best troubleshooters come to that solution in the end. ~son of wyteyes~

i have all the latest microsoft upgrades and i uninstalled the media player. i have downloaded the media player 10.

i get an error message that says "this version of windows media technologies is incompatible with this version of windows. for more information, view the information at the microsoft web site."

these web sites provide some answers

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/business/technology/10728899.htm?1c

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/209892_msftreduced29.html

still doesn't explain why it stopped working when it was installed. perhaps the latest upgrade deleted some of the files.

i have all my music backed up on an external hard drive. now i need to learn how to use real player to add my music to it's program or i need to try winamp. my musics files are all listed as .wma files which i'm sure has some meaning to people that know about these things, i don't.

a little more help please.

Rick,

don't know what happened with your Windows Media.. sounds like one of the porn sites you visited must have ate it up??? and the second download sounds like you downloaded a europian version thats not compatable with your American Windows based system...

realplayer you need to go to "Tools" then "Prefrences"
it will open up a box..(General) in there it will say "File Locations" this is where you put in the location and which drive you have your backed up music... the second line is your temp file location... that is where your recently played files are holed up...

The Bush administration has to be at fault here. The CIA, in an effort to quell the voice of a great American Patriot (Maven)has tapped into his computer and removed his media player.

Rick,

I recommend you attempt a system state recovery to get your system back to the last known good state. Start >> programs >> accessories >> system tools >> system restore. Hopefully this option is enabled on your box. Simply select a day that you know your PC was a happy camper and restore it. I've used this successfully on mucho number of systems and it works like a champ. Please read all the fine print and crap like that when your doing it, but overall it fairly safe procedure.

i've done that a number of times with different dates and i get "unable to restore to that date.

perhaps 8trackdisco is correct?

Hog is probably correct. You might have core OS problems. Protect your data then run a scan disk... My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Tools, Error checking ,Check Now, Select Options, check both automaitcally fix and recover bad sectors, then hit Start. Since your doing your C:\ a reboot might be needed to complete it. If your machine makes it back then do a express re-install of the OS by jamming in the XP CD while your booted to XP. Follow prompts for repair make sure you reinstall the OS in the same directory. All your programs should come along for the ride, but your not going to be patched so you will need to run winodows update until it is happy. This process may buy you nothing towards your media player issue becuase you will likely bring your screwed up registry settings right along with you.

Another approach would be to look for instructions on how to remove Windows Media Player by hand which is basically dropping the hammer on all reg entries and directories associated with it.

could you not DL an older version of Win Media Player and set your OS to recognise it for that older version? ie., Win95, 98, ME yada yada? maybe it would run if you set it to play on an older OS version.

I talked to my son this morning and he said sometimes you just have to through in the towel and take it to the shop. My personal opinion is that our programs interfere with the govts monitoring devices and they in turn over ride our stuff. :o) Right after he messaged you yesterday, he completely dismantled our Imac and reformatted the whole thing with a daily backup renewal system. What ever he did it works better than ever.
