The article is long, but no matter how you feel about the war in Iraq this LTC Fran Ryan’s opinion deserve to be heard. You need to read it all the way through to the postscript; he tells it like it is.

I can only add that I hope you will spread this around.

Hog,

Jekyl only snipes in and out on occassion, so doubt he will pick up on this one as well.

I know a lot of you are going to hit the floor on this one, but I am not as much a Republican as you think I am! Yes, I voted for GWB, and yes I think Ronnie was the greatest of all Presidents, but I am really almost a libraterian, but that does not make sense to vote as one, since they do not have a chance! So I will continue to vote Republican, especially since that loud mouth liberal idiot was picked as DNC....what a joke!

ok i read the article and have some questions.

1. what is our objective there? and why did we invade Iraq if they had nothing to do with 9/11

2. do you really believe the enemy was "well prepared"?
we have better technology don't we?

3. comparing Iraq to WWII?? difference is we actually had a chance to lose there. did anyone ever think Iraq could beat the USA??

4. maybe we should report the number of dead Iraqi's. it might show the USA as a bully. just because we can kick another country's ass doesn't mean we ought to. it means we probably should think it over carefully.

5. yep hearing all that artillary makes my ****** hard too. i'm sure its hitting nothing but insurgents. (symphony?)i wonder what the music sounds like where those shells hit?

6. the papers talk of suicide bombers because most people know you cannot totally defeat an enemy that has nothing to lose. how long has Israel been fighting suicide bomber? i'm sure they're close to winning.

7. the media did show the beheadings i believe. and i don't think anyone has "given them a pass"

8. as for the Abu Ghuraib prison torture i can explain it to you SIR....THEY ARE TERRORISTS. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO ABIDE BY THIS LITTLE DOCUMENT CALLED THE GENEVA CONVENTION.... yeah we agreed years ago not to act like savages. one of the costs of trying to be a civilized society. torturing and killing a prisoner is a crime not only because we consider it a savage brutal act but hey, what if he's innocent?

9. as for the enemy hiding weapons in schools and mosques; they are fighting a guerilla war and thats how its done. they think they are fighting a holy war. btw i'm still waiting on the biological weapons to appear.

10. yes we are an invading force. like it or not that is how the world sees it. we said we went in because they were supporting terrorist that were involved in the 9/11 attack and that they had chemical and biological weapons. and now we find out that ooops we were wrong.
none of the above was true.

11. it wasn't just the military that was involved in the prison torture. it was the CIA too. so how far up the ladder did the knowledge go? anybody remember the memos?

12. nobody cares about a sewer being completed because this is a war right? a war that was a mistake. "hello we destroyed your country" "sorry let us rebuild some of it for you."

13. i like the thing about "experience in nation building". what experience do we have and why should WE build a nation for a people that don't even think like we do. their whole belief system is different. wake up soldier IRAQI'S DIDN'T GROW UP AMERICAN AND DON'T THINK LIKE WE DO. so what business do we have building them a nation. here's an idea. let them build their own nation.

14. comparing muslim extremist to the Algerians and Chinese? they weren't fighting what they believed to be a holy war. this soldier sounds like a student of war or a Soldier of Fortune wannabe.

well sorry to disagree but this guy sounds like bit of a loon. just because he is there and give his perspetive doesn't make him right. and if he is happy to be there then let him stay. i just don't wish to pay for his stay anymore. 80 billion dollars and for what??? the cost far outweighs any benefit.

Since you are not in Iraq, and refuse to accept anyone else's opinion, other than the media, the title is correct. Your inability to see a difference in Iraq between now and under Saddam is stunning. The country, other his palaces and his party member towns, the entire country was a mess. This is a fact even if you oppose the war. There must be some other cause for your unreasonable tunnel vision. I recommend you consult a medical doctor about a lens transplant for your navel so you can see where you are going.

my beef with this war is not the status or conditions of the Iraqi people. its the fact that we cannot afford it. the reason for it was a lie, mistake, fantasy, or what have you. 80 billion more to contribute to a situation that is already a mess is insanity. we did not go over there to "free a people living in tyranny." we supposedly went over there to protect our own way of life which turns out was never really threatened by Iraq.

now if you folks care so much about the people of Iraq then you send your money and sons and daughters over there. not someone elses.

Iraq may or may not be better off. that fact remains to be seen after we leave. i however wouldn't bet on a muslim government allowing too much freedom. its not in the nature of their religion that sees females as 2nd class citizens. however i really don't care. its not my fight. we have enough problems taking care of our own citizens.

also could you please name one time when the USA went over to free a people, establish a democratic form of government, in a muslim country and it worked?????

Iran is such a glowing example. i do belive here we may end up replacing one tyrant with another.

What is the base for your bigotry against the Iraqi people and the Muslim religion?

You don’t think having Syria and Iran fret about a democratic neighbor is good for us, wow. Since it is unlikely that a magic democracy wand will be waved to make the middle east all better, why not start one place at a time, and make it Iraq Why not make it up to the people who lived under regimes we helped in the past, Iran.

As for affording it, why could we afford it in Bosnia and not Iraq? Is it the fact that we have a republican leader now and not a Democrat?

jekyl9

don't confuse not giving a damn with bigotry. i'm not a big fan of any religion that controls government policy

also Bosnia was a different animal altogether.

in addition its easy to spend someone elses money, isn't it?????

and if you think ol king george gives a damn about you or any other country its time to wake up.

however i will give you that maybe he does care and if he does thats great. however he wasn't elected to help them. his job is to deal with this country and i think most americans would rather have that 80billion spent here

1. No evidence of DIRECT ties to 9/11. Certainly a major sponser of terrorism, and therefore the Presdient is authorized, by 100% vote of Congress on 9/13, to take action.

2. What does technology have to do with being well prepared. The Russians had much better technology the the Afgan's. Who was better prepared?

3. Ted Kennedy and a lot of the media and Hollywood seem to think so.

4. Sure, report on dead Iraqui's, compare it with Saddam, and report on dead terrorists also.

5. Obviously innocents are sometimes hit but our guys, at risk of their own lives, take every step to minimize innocent casualties, unlike the terrorists who target innocents because they are afraid of our troops.

6. Isreal has been fighting terrorists since their inception. Should they quit fighting them and just die?

7. I follow the news fairly closely and have seen very little on the terrorist atrocities when compared to the huge press give Abu Ghuraib.

8. What happened at Abu Ghuraib was humiliation, not torter. We are also prosecueting those responsible, unlike the terroristrs who praise merders. And, oh by the way, the terrorists are not subject to, have not signed, nor do they suscribe to the Geneva Convention. In spite of that, because we are morally superior, we attempt to follow it.

9. In spite of the fact that putting weapons in Mosques makes them a legit target, we try to minimize damage to them, and take casualities doing it.

10. The entire world, including France and Germany, were completely convenced he had WMD's. He had used them so he certainly had them at one point. Prehaps a better question is what happened to them? What was in the convey's of trucks moving into Syria and guarded by Saddam's special troops?

11. Prosecute those truely involved in torture. Embarrassement and discomfort is not torture.

12. I guess Saddam was just an innocent bystander while we distroyed his country.I repeat, if you harbor terrorists you are a target.

13. Sounds like the argument about the Japanese not being like us and not wanting freedom that took place after WW2. By the way, did you know there were just very successful elections held in Iraq? Better turn out then the US.

14. No serious military officer has not read these standard texts. Have you?

A well read and highly trained military officer sounds like a loon because he disagrees with you? The fact that he is educated in war, experienced, well read and in the area makes him a little more qualified then you or I. What was the cost of 9/11? We have these terrorists on the run. Keep them running, keep them dying, and we can reduce our chances of being hit again, although we almost certainly will be. We are at war. Submission rarely if ever works, therefore, we fight.

"Those who don't care about money usually don't have any".

I disagree.

Those who don't care about money usually have it figured out... that money ain't everything.

I do not agree with us spending all those billions in Iraq either. I really don't. I think they should use their own money to do it. But they do need our help, and I think that eventually, WHEN democracy takes hold over there, things will get a lot better.
