An avowed Atheist

A college professor, an avowed Atheist, was teaching his class. He shocked several of his students when he flatly stated that there is no God, the expression, "One Nation Under God", was unconstitutional, and further, he was going to prove there is no God. Addressing the ceiling he shouted: "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this Platform. I'll give you 15 minutes!" The lecture room fell silent. You could have heard a pin fall. Ten minutes went by. Again he taunted God, saying, "Here I am, God. I'm still waiting." His countdown got down to the last couple of minutes when a Marine just released from active duty and newly registered in the class walked up to the professor, hit him full force in the face, and sent him back over teacups from his lofty platform. The professor was out cold! At first the students were shocked and babbled in confusion. The young Marine took a seat in the front row and sat silent. The class fell silent...waiting. Eventually, the professor came to, shaken. He looked at the young Marine in the front row. When he regained his senses and could speak he yelled, "What's the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

"God was busy. He sent me."

it is not about atheism. It is more about fundamentalist religion. The idea that the "marine" decided that his violent actions were the work of god.

Does that sound familiar? Islamic extremists take this idea to an even greater extreme than that suggested in the joke. The concept is rediculous and offensive to me, especially when he is attacking a professor.

I happen to be a person who is not an athiest, however, I think that professors and teachers have done a lot more good for society than organized religions (whose actions are often a detriment to society).

I'm going to render a guess in the dark and say that you weren't a marine. This story was more to the compliment of the marine corps, than anything to do with religion.

The Professor should know that you can't "PROVE" a negative.

The Marine was simply helping him understand that.

And PMoreno, Although most professors do good things for society, and most religions have a dark side in their history books, you shouldn't dismiss the immense GOOD that is provided by most major religions.

That's a very pathetic viewpoint to take.

Especially when you consider that professors are paid for their "good deeds", while having Faith is voluntary.

At least in America.

Tailgater...

one thing to keep in mind. This "professor" is fictional... This didn't really happen. It was made up to make a group of people feel smarter than they are. It amounts to minimalizing the achievements of the professor by making a statement like "don't feel so smart now... do you?" To me it looks like a way of compensating for a feeling of inadequacy when it comes to intellectualism.

I will acknowledge good done by selfless people of faith. I am making the statement that many teachers are also alturistic.

it's a freakin' joke. laugh or don't laugh and move on. pmoreno, this is why so many people stop listening to you and rick. take the statement for what it's worth, and keep on truckin'. if you can't choose your battles with a little more intelligence, you'll be labeled as a whiner. you simply can't gripe at everything when you're the minority. believe me, i know.

i would never agree with the actions in the joke. i'm not remotely religious. i can, however, see the value in the story. it's funny, and it's not worth griping about the differences between my philosophy and the message being conveyed. why? IT'S A JOKE!

easy Lofty, he wasn't talking about you...

... I believe the Delta was requesting that Pmoreno's name be placed on the ballid for "Bitch of the week" next week.

I'm going to second that, and formally place his name on the ballet. Way to keep your eyes open Delta.

PMoreno,

Of course this is fictional.

However, if you choose to view the Marine's actions as representative of religious acts of violence, and then to make the assumption that the "unintelligent " need to somehow use physical force to make their point, then I see it necessary to once again point out the one MAJOR flaw in the professors "lesson".

You honestly can not prove a negative.

The punch line (pun intended) simply reinforces this notion.

If we choose to delve further into this anectdote, then perhaps we should point out the fact that an entire classroom chose dumbfounded silence rather than contradict an insane professors claims.

Is that how we want our children to be taught?

Please realize that I accept the above story as the joke it's intended to be. I simply had to respond when you attempted to make it into something it wasn't.

Peace.

I am an avowed Christian and I thought it was very funny. Somtimes you just have to enjoy the humor and not try to over analize every thing. I am getting tired of trying to be PC all the time
