The new year has seen two instances of smoking restrictions going further than ever before. As lovers of the leaf are being banished from the indoors worldwide, in some places in the United States they are even being pushed around outdoors and, in one instance, smoking cost several people their job.

The San Francisco city legislature voted 8-3 on Tuesday to prohibit smoking in virtually all public spaces, including parks and squares. Those caught taking a puff in the fresh-air areas would be fined up to $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second and $500 for each additional violation.

The ban in the city would follow on the heels of similar bans enacted in other California municipalities such as Santa Monica, Pasadena, Santa Cruz and Beverly Hills.

The ordinance on public smoking, which is expected to be signed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, would go into effect on July 1.

By that time, "No Smoking" signs will have been put up in the designated public areas. Well-known tourist destinations, public golf courses and federal lands would be the only areas where tobacco users could still enjoy a cigar or cigarette.

Halfway across the country, in Okemos, Michigan, four people lost their job as a result of smoking. Health care company Weyco Inc. has enacted a company policy prohibiting its employees from smoking, not just on company premises or during work hours, but at home and away from work as well.

On January 1, the policy was instituted, allowing tobacco-using employees to be fired. To enforce the policy, the company has instituted unannounced random tests.

First, selected employees are required to submit a breath sample. If they test positive, the employees are subject to disciplinary action, which includes unpaid suspension for a minimum of five days and termination with the second offense.

Four employees refused to take the tests and were fired. The company points to concerns over employee health and rising health care costs as reasons behind its decision to adopt the smoking prohibition.

According to a company release, the action is part of an effort to promote healthy living, which it began establishing five years ago. The tobacco-free policy went into effect in 2003, which included smoking-cessation classes for tobacco users. The company estimates that at the time the policy was implemented, 15 to 20 of its approximately 200 employees were smokers. As many as 14 of the smokers gave up the habit before the policy went into effect.

TThe anti smoking nannys are getting out of control.
In Phila., there is a movement to ban smoking in all restaurant/bars.
But of bigger concern is the firing of persons who smoke at home.
Watch, next will be fast food eaters, the sedentary, or people who engage in high risk sex...I can't take it anymore! I'm gonna have an early lunch, have a dbl. cheeseburger, fries, a couple of Martinis and smoke a few cigars!

I'm surprised, in our sue-happy society, that none of the employees have tried to sue that health care company for prohibiting them from smoking at home. It will be interesting to see how that will work out.

Hey chuck, you taking a shot at me because I don't give a rat's fat a$$ if a guy chooses to name himself after a whack-job from WWII?

And because I believe that most people here who have chosen to bash him are doing it to follow the PC crowd, like lemmings over a cliff?

That's cool. You're still welcome to come on over and smoke cigars, drink beer and eat food at my house.

I ain't mad atcha. 🙂

I can't wait until we ban BO. I think that's way worse than the smell of smoking.

Oh wait... BO doesn't cost our healthcare system anything. Welcome to the promise of "Free Healthcare for All!!"

Hey THOM...

They've already installed themselves here and are digging in for the long haul. We have darn near the higest tobacco taxes in the west, and ole Chrissy Gregoire will try to abolish all smoking indoors which by the way is still legal here. I personally don't smoke cigarettes, but believe me, I enjoy the stogies.

BUT...I will not smoke one near someone who does not care for the smell. That's his choice and I would hope someone would be as courteous to me as I am to them.

BUT...I DON'T WANT ANY ONE FORCING THAT PRACTICE ON ME.

And I wouldn't want any one kicked outside just because they want to have an after dinner cigarette. That's why 2 sections of the restaraunt or lounge are offered. And I smoke my stogies at home or, with friends.

I lived in Califoolinya for 20 plus years and we got the H=LL outa there. Won't be long and the smoke police will get you at your house because your neighbor can smell your CAO from his back yard, and his pasty faced friends are complaining and by God, it's ruining his bun length wieners.

They didn't say "hey let's take away our kids rights" People today are more concerned about what's going on in someone else's back yard than there own. Guys,Dads,Grandads.. went to war for us, they be turning over in their graves and whipping some a$$if they knew all this bull **** was going on!People of higher standards get of your high a$$ horse and come to your senses. The parks, federal lands and public places who do you think made all this happen, why our ancestors did and if you ever looked at any of the older photographs of events most of the men were smoking cigars & cigs. Better stop here this is a sore issue. That,s why I live out of the F***ing city
