I haven't had a candela-wrapped cigar in quite a while, but I remember they were good for a little change of pace. Any of you regularly smoke any? If so, what kind? They're few and far between out there -- I believe Fuente and HdM carry a candela line. I had a few candela Berings long ago -- not bad. The best I've had, though, was a candela JR Ultimate.

The candela wrapper compared to a natural is like comparing green tea to red (fermented) tea. It's thinner and more bitter. If you were talking about candies you would say it was more "adult" rather than appologizing. About thirty years ago I was talking to a wholesaler of cigars in Chicago who was bemoaning the fact that Hoyo De Monterrey had sent him several boxes of green Hoyo's by mistake and he just couldn't sell them in the midwest. This despite the fact that they were just as good as the naturals except that they were a more bitter, more esoteric taste. He was, also, proud to say that his family owned Hoyo/Punch (this was about 1971) so I think he should have known what he was talking about.

The point is he had to provide what the American market would buy so that's what the new smokers would see on the shelves. So that's what the new smokers would learn to like and the process repeats.

I used to like Bering Plaza candela, so-called "lights". They used to be of reasonable quality, consistent and reasonably priced.

Meanie,was that the cigar JC was handing out in the bar at the Springfield Herf? If so,thats the only Candela I've ever smoked,not bad but very mild with a decent/distinct flavor.

I had a few Fuente 8-5-8 Candelas. A WAY different flavor and milder than a Maduro 8-5-8, the only other 8-5-8 I've had. Pretty much ruined the cigar for my taste.
