The following is a response to a Mother’s concern for her son and her prayers.

My son, aside from being a husband and father, is involved in three other endeavors: he holds down a nursing job, is studying for his master's degree and teaches at a local college. As you might imagine, he's sleep deprived and, because these pursuits require a great deal of driving and shuttling back and forth between jobs, I'm worried that my son could fall asleep at the wheel and have an accident. After praying very hard for God to protect my son, I began to reflect on all of this. Would God prefer to see my son bleeding and broken in the road, and is it only the prayers of a mother that prompt God to protect him? Does God have a taste for bad outcomes, and is it only our badgering that sways God - sometimes? - E. Dix hills. N.Y

A: Why do we pray? When we speak to children, we tell them there are four kinds of prayers, thanks, gimmie, oops and wow.

"Thanks" prayers express gratitude to God for some blessing already given.

"Gimmie" prayers ask God for a blessing sought.

"Oops" prayers ask God to forgive us for some sin.

"Wow" prayers express our awe at God s creation.

Asking about the spiritual logic of gimmie prayers, which are, in our experience, by far the most numerous. To ask God's protection for your son is fine. You're asking God to do something for someone else rather than yourself, and you're asking for something you clearly cannot do yourself.

The problem you're having is quite interesting and important. You're wondering whether the only reason God decides to keep your son safe is your gimmie prayers, and whether, in the absence of those prayers, God would allow some terrible fate to befall him.

Why would you think such cruel thoughts about God? Why would yon suppose that the God who created the world and all of us and who has loved us with a great and sustaining love would want to wait for some day you forgot to pray to zap your son?

God gives and God takes away. Our lives are bounded by those spiritual parentheses.

What happens in the middle is our business. God is not waiting to hurt your son and you're not swaying God with your prayers.

The purpose of all gimmie prayers is not to get stuff from God but to ask God's help in adjusting to our circumstances and to ask for courage and resolve to make those circumstances better.

If your son stuffs his life with too many obligations, no matter his good intentions, he's needlessly risking his life.

Asking god to protect your son from needless risks is foolish, however. Your prayers are your way to cope with your fears, but a direct encounter with your son makes more sense than wondering what God is up to.

Speak with your son and tell him to slow down, but don't suppose God lies in wait to do him in.

God lies in wait to lift him up and with him all of us into a world where one day time will not matter at all.

This is how my prayers go at night. I guess looking at it as I think about how I start and how I end people could look at it as being selfish on my part, but then again, it is my prayers, maybe I should think about rearranging my prayers, but I digress...

I start out with asking God to keep Sterling safe and to have him be a healthy baby when he is born, then I pray for myself, to keep healthy for Sterling and to do all that I'm supposed to eating wise, exercise wise to ensure that he is safe and healthy, I also ask for help with all the stress that I put on myself, then I pray for Clive to bring him home safely and to help him with his stresses, then my mom and step dad - for their financial problems, and health issues and the like. Then I pray for my friends and family both in real life and online - if I know of a specific need I add that in as well. Then I pray for our troops in this country, abroad and especially those in Afghanistan and Iraq, then I pray for the leaders of our government, especially the president in making good decisions for all of us. sometimes I pray for the governments of afghanistan and iraq and for freedom for their peoples. then I generally pray for all those that are in need for whatever reason and for God to be with them. Then I thank Him for His many blessings and answers to prayers, especially Clive and our treasure Sterling Robert, I thank Him for all He's done in our lives and all that He's going to do and thank Him for being a loving and forgiving God and sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and then I say amen. That is what I say every night or something close to it before I go to bed.

Liz,

I didn't see anything selfish in your prayer at all, to me it was pretty much what I would think a prayer should be mostly for watching over you and your concerns.... mine are much shorter but pretty much cover the same ground... ahhaha

Take some good care,

Gregg

I have found the last couple nights that my thoughts must be disturbed greatly because my praying usually isn't as disjointed as they have been. I start praying, my mind wanders no matter how hard I try to keep it on the right plane, it is frustrating. The Terry Shaivo case has been bothering me a lot, maybe that is the problem. Also the disappearance and murders of those two little girls along with Clive being gone and inching ever closer to giving birth to my little jumping bean my mind has just been racing in every direction and I think even making up a few along the way! Maybe I need to put on my environmental musical thingy Clive got me for Christmas and get into a meditative mode before praying and see if that helps. I know God listens to prayers, even those that are disjointed by other thoughts, it just bothers me.

Liz,

Not to worry.... We have one to intercede for us when praying is difficult.....

But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:25-27

John, That was a great passage to post. Thanks

We pray because that is what we are created for.It is to have fellowship and worship God.
