The only fantasy author that I have ever really liked is Terry Brooks. I have read most of the Shanarra books and am getting back into them. I quit reading him back in about 1994 because I had read all of them up to that point. I have a few more to read and then I will be done with all of them again.

iwolf... I ain't into d&d, but we do read the same books it seems.

I am currently reading R A Salvatore myself, because I got sick of Jordan's BS with the Wheel of Time series.

It was a GREAT story until about book nine. I mean, c'mon, 9 books with 600 plus pages each? FINISH THE F'IN STORY!!! I've read all 10 books in paperback and will wait until 11 comes out in paperback before I read it. By then i'll have read so many other books I won't remember the storyline.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman write some outstanding books. Try the 'Deathgate Cycle' by those two. 7 book series that you won't be able to put down until book 7 is done.

Have read some over the years, but like the Conan series and have read Michael Moorcock's books, along with some others I cannot recall.

I like fantasy art such as Frank Frazetta more than the novels and stories!

Try some Spider Robinson sometime, more of a Sci Fi Author, but his Callahan Stories Rock. Alcoholic vampires and talking dogs aside, "Time Travelers Strictly Cash", is one of my favorites.

When I was in my teens and 20s I read all the fantasy and sci-fi that I could get my hands on. Then I drifted away and concentrated on history and biographies.

My son hated to read. He didn't have the patience for it. Then he was embarassed over his poor reading after his peers passed him by and that caused him to try to hide what a poor reader he was, one of those vicious cycle deals. He also loved Star Wars, Skeletor, He-Man and that kind of stuff. I gave him one of my old Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever books by Stephen Donaldson and he was hooked by the 2nd chapter. I forced him to read a chapter every other day and then tell me about it, but he was not to tell his mother. Within the month he was spending every spare minute reading. When my wife found out she was horrified that I had exposed her little boy to that racy garbage, but she stayed out of it because of the positive results. Now that 12 year old is a senior at U. Colorado and will graduate with a double major this spring and was in the 98% tile for his Masters entrance exam.

These books may be timewasters to some, but they are lifesavers to others.

Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote some awesome Tarzan books. I read a bunch in that series when I was in High school.

Brooks is great, Pratchet is a hoot to read.

I actually named all my D&D characters after Ursala K LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy characters...I'd still be playing today if I could find anyone that plays it.

Some other fantasy writers I really like:

Raymond E. Feist

Katherine Kurtz

Christopher Stasheff

Fred Saberhagen

Tad Williams

Terry Goodkind

Fritz Lieber

Roger Zelazney

C.J. Cherryh

There's two eight foot shelves of their wares in my bar above the encyclopedias and history books.

I will add that Jordon needs to get this 5 book series finished. Thats right, it was supposed to be a five book series. I did notice that he had the time to write a prequel to put out in the meantime...

Dragon Wing

Elven Star

Fire Sea

Serpent Mage

The Hand of Chaos

Into the Labyrinth

The Seventh Gate

These are the 7 books in the 'Deathgate Cycle'. Written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. 7 of the best books I ever read. If you like Jordan's Wheel of Time and you haven't read these books... I'd get them.

R A Salvatore is one of my favorites. The Icewind Dale Trilogy was a great series. I think Drizzt is my favorite character of all I've read The Dark Elf series up to The Silent Blade. I read alot of Piers Anthony when I was younger and even Clive Barker ie WeaveWorld or Imajica. Also I'm still a die hard comic fan.

THL....

as an English teacher who has lots of boys in my class who find themselves with the same problem as your son, your story is very common. Fantasy books are often the only way most young boys get into reading (it worked for me.)

I also want to applaud you for your efforts in getting your son to read...9 times out of 10 the parent only blames the school and the teacher without doing anything to solve the problem....you are a teachers dream come true
