tachikawa. 1954. 21 year old airman stationed on guam with no women to stand close to, to talk to, to smell.
i spent a lifetime in tachikawa one 4 day weekend.
on my next trips, i toured by myself. got on a train going who knows where and got off when it looked nice.
everyone was my size so i posed no threat.
i had not been where everyone was kind, helpful, and all around interesting. i loved the places and i loved the people.
the ginza was like a swap meet with stalls all over the place. any bar or restaurant i walked into i felt at home. when i asked someone for directions, they would walk most of the way with me to show me the way.
i tried to tip people and they would return the money.
i remember in one restaurant when i sort of pushed the money in a waitress's hands, i saw her a few minutes later sitting down and eating something and every one smiling at me. apparently i bought lunch for her and that was not considerd a tip.
360 yen ='d $1.00.
