At this point in his career, Greg Maddux just doesn't have the same kind of stuff he used to. Pitches up in the zone, 85-86 MPH fastballs just don't fool anyone. I think he threw about 3 curve balls out of 90 pitches. He won't start to have good movement on his pitches until June. He gave up 2 bombs to Gonzalez. But, the bullpen looked great tonight. Rem, Wuertz, and Chad Fox were awesome. That's a good sign.

On the subject of not having the stuff anymore.... what about Greg's buddy John Smolts... ouch.

1 2/3 innings, 32.40 era for the year. Smoltzy needs to go back to the 'pen.

...That was a tough outing for Smoltzie. He'll shake it off and be back out there again in 5 days. Great velocity, but very hittable. Last time I saw him get shelled like that was against the Mets right before he had arm surgery.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim north of Tiajuana and west of Hemet won their opener although the Texas pitcher,Ryan Drese, was outstnding! He just could not get Vlad Guerreo out, which will be a problem for a lot of pitchers!

The above is a "play" on the new name of the Angels!

Stupidest team name of all time...from a devoted fan of the Northwest Los Angeles A's of Oakland

I concur. Way to alienate your fan base.

Guys,

The Angels have the second largest number of season ticket holders in baseball, second only to the NY Yankees!

I hate the LA Angels of Anaheim idea for a name, but as long as Moreno spends money to keep a winner he can call it what he wants!

I would love to see a Padre vs Angels World Series!

The team was originally called the LA Angels, evolved into the California Angels, then the Anaheim Angels and now the LA Angels of Anaheim ...

My take was that going from Calif Angels to Anaheim Angels was the more risky change in terms of alienating the fan base ... after all, there are 3 communities other than Anaheim from which fans could actually WALK to the games ... and what, Charlie, maybe 20 others within easy driving distance ??

Thing is, folks in Orange County don't care to be associated with LA ... up here, it's different for some reason ... no one minds being part of the SF Bay Area .... down there, everyone in OC goes to great lengths to NOT be associated with LA ... which to my way of thinking is what makes this particular name change so strange .. seems like a marketing faux pas, but then again, Moreno is rich and I'm not, so he obviously knows something I don't ... LOL

maybe the A's should change their name to the San Fransisco Bay Area of California A's of Oakland....personally I would prefer they make the smartest move, shift the Rivercats to Oakland and become the Sacramento A's....then I would only live an hour away and I could and would be a season ticket holder

oh yeah and Charlie....if you were a little upset because of my post, frankly I'll be honest and say that even though I am an A's fan....I don't hate the Angels, and I think they will win the west again....in fact, it's sad, but I don't think the A's have a true rivalry in the division (as in animosity between teams/fans) we hate the Yankees and Sox coming to town, and I get great joy out of beating the Twins for reasons unfathomable to me, but other than that, the A's have no real rivals

SteveS: Cubs are on pace to lose 162 games? I think you need to get your stats straight before you push the "post" button... they's won "1" game and lost "1" game.

not a bit upset about your post! I love MLB so much that I have a tendancy to overreact sometimes!

I hope you did not think that I was upset because, I assure you I am not!

I'm with you Charlie. As a 25+ year fan of the Angels, as long as Moreno puts a pennant and world series contender on the field each year, he can call them what he wants.
