Remember DMSO? The miracle "cleaning solvent" that was absorbed through the skin and immediately cured pain?

You rubbed it on your tennis elbow and within a few seconds you tasted garlic, but your pain was gone. Mix it with lemon juice and put some on your big toe, 10 seconds later you tasted lemons and your big toe didn't hurt anymore?

It caused that tragedy in that hospital that killed those folks when it mixed with whatever drugs that lady was taking and created nerve gas.

Anybody here every mix it with some really high grade LSD and sneak into the teachers lounge before class when they were in high school and rub it on the coffee cup handles? Guaranteed to be a fun day in school that day.....at least until half of the teachers went home.

That was cool.........I was the first chemical terrorist in central Illinois I think.

Ahhh, the memories.

Could be urban legend, but I rember discussions at the university with a well educated yet misguided gentleman nicknamed the Grossburger who claimed the CIA used to load squirt guns with liquid LSD and DMSO. Evidently it trabvels quickly to the nervous system.

I didn't always trust what he told me, but this seemed to be a subject he was quite knowledgable on. His heros were Timothy Leary, and the late great Hunter S. Thompson.

How he got the nickname the Grossburger is another question all together lol. (the name is from stir crazy, the reason is not)

I have a big problem with my athletes and DMSO. The biggest problem is that it is a carrying agent and it will carry impurities into the blood stream. That is why is is approved for use on horses and NOT humans. Another serious side effect to using it is that it can cause the 'synovial sheath' that protects your tendons to dry out and fray. This results in a massive weakening of the tendon eventually leading to a tendon rupture.

I try really hard to stress to my athletes that the temporary pain relief is not worth the long-term problems.

I agree. I've used it before on limited occaisions when you really need some quick relief. Not for long term use though as you state.

For serious pain relief, in OZ you can pick up Panadeine 500 MG tablets for the same cost as Tylenol. Each one (take two just like Tylenol) has 8 MG of Codeine. Headaches go away in about 3 minutes. So does all your stress and concern for anything else....ha ha.

For years, my dad used DSMO on his shoulder and elbow for bursitis ... and it worked wonders for him ...

... he's 78 now, and still going strong.
