Ironically I read this while drinking my Brazilian coffee this morning and thinking of smoking a Brazilia this afternoon. I didn't realize this was going on.

Same **** different country.

This happens way to often and where is the UN? We try but how do you police the world?

I don't believe its our duty to police this, or many other situations.

I just hate how little "we" know about world affairs - and I'm guilty of it too. Our media is very ego-centric.

That is where I am at Ryan. I don't feel it is our (the US) responsibility. But I felt kind of bad drinking their coffee with no clue what is going on there.

The coffee is pretty damn good though.

Unfortunately we have played the role of 'policeman' since WWII. Not sure how I feel about it but I thought the UN, NATO and others should have the role not us.

How does the world sit by and watch this?

I agree - good coffee.

I did see this in my local paper. It caught my interest because my daughter is in Rio going to school for a year. I'm scheduled to visit her in July.

The favelas (slums) are a completely different world down there. The hillsides around Rio are filled with the shacks and shanties of the dispossessed. No water, no utilities, no rent, no services. Only the drug gangs to provide security. Even the police will only enter in squad-sized forces. It's a veritable war zone.

My daughter is teaching English in a favela somewhere in Rio.

I rented the movie City of God a couple of weeks ago...it talks about this kind of stuff. Its in Portugese, but it is intense, one of the best movies I have ever seen. I would reccomend it to anyone who wasn't going to watch it in front of children. If you decide to rent it, make sure to watch the documentary afterwards....the rows and rows and rows of guns are unbelievable.

For another movie that deals with this idea of our egocentrism and the media...watch Hotel Rwanda coming out in a few weeks. I don't cry often, this movie did it to me though...

I really want to see hotel rawanda. I'll have to look for the other one too.

I started watching Sometimes in April the other night. It looks excellent, but we turned it off because we knew we wouldn't make it to the end (it started at 11:30 and I'm getting old). I want to watch the whole thing.
