jetblasted

Just wondering about the origin of everyone's handle . . . I call myself, jetblasted, because I spent 22 yrs on the ramp with the airlines. And, everyday, at some point I would drive a tug behind a moving aircraft and get, ... jet-blasted.

So, my curiosity has been getting the best of me ... What does TrannyMK, mean? How about chipslave? slimboli? ect, ect ... just curious about what people call themselves. Thanks !

Mine came from the plate on my Harley... between two Harley's I logged almost 100K miles and all but 8 states in the USA... from 1993 to 2001...

You used to be able to search all the older posts.

Oh well.

My handle was given to me by my wife and the guys who worked for me.

I have "zero" patience. I wanted everything done right now and would get to a point where if things weren't getting done quick enough, I would pull them off the job and do it myself.

So when I got on the internet, it was the obvious choice for a handle. LOL!

OK, this is off topic, but just curious. Step up and tell us how you chose your user name. There's some interesting names out there, and probably some interesting explanations. I'LL START -- me, the most creative of all: The User Forum was brand new, and I was eager to sign up. When I was asked to type in "user name", I thought I was being asked the initials I go by when bidding. BRILLIANT, huh? I guess I could've been even dumber and come up with the user name "username". So, anyone else? Gsu Guy? Slimboli? Rookie? Hegemonic? Hansen (mmm-bop)?

I joined the Air Force back in '72', and when I got to Basic Training and went to get my uniforms, they didn't have my size, and had to 'tailor' my uniform. At that time (no longer) my waist was 26" and my inseam was 36" ... and I am 6' 6" tall. So, that began my nickname, Slim. Years later, a very good friend of mine, for no good reason, started calling me Slimboli. It may have been that my wife turned him on to that ready-made 'Boboli' flat bread (you can make pizza's with it)and he really liked it, so he combined the two. I go my the nickname Slim, but in trying to get 'usernames' at different sites, Slim is always taken, and Slimboli is so odd, that it is always available. Needless to say ... the waist has grown over the years ... but the name has stuck!

I got the nickname jcrimmins due to my lack of imagination and creativity. I guess the nickname just sort of stuck with me. Life's funny!

11. Author: hegemonic Date: 10/07/2000 05:30 PM Reply

Well, you asked... I chose my name basically because no one else in the world would use it since most people have ever heard of it before. Hegemonic (prounounced heh-jeh-mahn-ik) is an adjective derived from the word hegemony (prounounced heh-jeh-mo-nee). Hegemony is a philosophical theory developed by the Italian philosopher Antonio Gramscii (20th Century). Basically, hegemony states that our shared culture as a society is an ongoing relationship between the people and the establishment; that extreme and/or radical ideas are accepted by the majority through homogenization. Through this process, a radical ideal is accepted by our culture by watering it down to make it more mainstream and therefore, less threatening, thus acceptable by society's standards as a whole. Hegemony goes against the Marxist idea that our culture is mandated to us by those in power, instead with hegemony, it is believed that our culture is a shared phenomenon, inclusive of all facets of our society. From that long drawn-out explanation you understand why I use so many damn commas 🙂 I use hegemonic as my online name because I believe in the merits of the theory. Why does it matter to me? Because I majored in film and philosophy as an undergrad and I pursued my Master of Fine Arts degree in acting and directing. That was the shortest explanation I could give. Sorry for the cost on your eyesight 🙂

13. Author: aberdeen Date: 10/07/2000 08:33 PM Reply

that is common sense, no politician is foolish enough to suggest radically new ideas, little by little and gradually subvert the sheep. Don't make changes fast, don't be aggressive with new ideas, learn to dull the masses first, lead and manipulate them with smaller steps. Suggest a law for gays to marry 20 years ago and your career would be ruined, suggest it now and you are considered enlightened. Radical activists make huge demands knowing that they could not get it, but usually get a compromise solution which could have been what they were after in the first place. Legalize drugs, privatize social security, end the public education monopoly? Good ideas perhaps but what politician running for a major office would suggest such a move, unless they had little to lose by it. What the Marx philosophy resulted in was 150,000,000 deaths since its inception. But moving in a radical direction too fast will alienate and be near impossible to change after that. If you aren't sure, you can test the waters by sacrificing a pawn, if he is crushed, it is too early to move.

Without waxing nostalgic I can say that this name has been with me ever since I began communicating on the internet in 1995.Back then you did not have to be too specific with email addresses and include numbers.I chose soothesayer because I was an unrepentant Dungeons and Dragons geek.A soothesayer is a seer of sorts or one with precognitative abilities in the game but in our own history is also a charlatan, bringer of falsehoods, and deceiver.I felt that this was an appropriate name for the internet still in its adolescence as millions of people began communicating with others in a whole new way and with monikers and assumed personalities which hid their true identities. To be called soothesayer was a warning to others that I too was not what I seemed in our growing virtual society.

Mine explation is probably the most dull. My name is Leif Kindler (pronunced life kin-dler), earlier it was Leif Kindler Hansen. My middle name runs back to being my grandmothers maiden name (she was from Poland) and for some years I'd thought 'bout loosing the Hansen. For years people had been calling me 'Hansen', which was obvious since it actualle was my (sir-)name. Then suddenly the authorities, in their wisdom, decided to charge money (tax) on namechanges, whenever not being caused by marrige, and I decided that it was time to move before I had to pay $375 to have my name changed.

I was tagged with Dr. Detroit from co-workers some years ago. Several of us were in NY to meet with the big wigs, when a night out on the town got us into hot water the next day. I took the blame and the name. I thought about using the nickname from my days in the navy. There I was coined "Big Ten" because of my love for Michigan and Big Ten football, however I discovered there was too much pressure trying to live up to and explain that nickname. I'll save that one for another bb.

"Doctor Numbers" = a nickname given to me by a late business associate. I'm a CPA/CFO and he thought the name appropriate and even somewhat flattering. Actually "doctoring" numbers has a very bad connotation, but I use it in honor of Paul Rule.

My favorite smoke (I'm a Newbie, so take this FWIW): Nat Sherman. I just love the smell and taste of this one. I have some super premiums from the Newbie Sampler sent to me, but I'm slowly going thru these and haven't found any I like better at this time.

"coda" is the musical term for a concluding section that has a different musical theme from the main piece (an unschooled interpretation). Sort of a musical non-sequitur.

It's also the title of the last Led Zeppelin LP, released shortly after their disolution.

Popped into my tiny little head when I was signing up.

Don't have a single favorite cigar yet, but I do like Fire by IT, sumatran wrappers, and smoking down to fingerburn.

Leon was the dumbest kid I ever met when growing up. He would do anything at the drop of a hat. He was to ingorant to ever equate cause and effect. When we were in our twenties he entered a tough man contest and never threw a punch for the first two rounds. He took the worst beating I have ever witnesses and then beat the other guy so badly in third round he was unconsciuos. So, thusly I have always idolized him for his freedom and lack of worries. The last time I saw him he had no teeth, no job, lived with his Mom and was happier than ever.

Ironically, my first name is Dan, which was also the name of the founder of that more infamous Gerber of babyfood fame. And yes, to anticipate the inevitable questions, I very much enjoyed my Gerber baby food as a tot. These days, however, my tastes lean toward Avo, Partagas, and Hoyo. Nice to be joining you all!

A recently departed friend of mine used to be a teaching pro here in the Bay Area ... he astonished me one day when he told me that I was in the best half of all golfers in the US ... I told him that simply wasn't possible for a guy who shoots between bogey and double bogey pretty consistantly ... he assured me it was true and said that half the golfers in the country have never broken 100 ... dunno where that leaves guys like Tony who might as well have called himself TonyTheTiger as far as his golf game and mine are compared ....

I was in the Army for years...(Infantry). So, don't expect anything original from me.

Last name Smith; being in the Army everyone calls you by your last name - that is until you get enough rank to be identified otherwise - and it was not easy to be identify in a group. So, I was always refered to as smithbw.

Plus as I said before I was infantry so if I forget my username (last name) I can always look "somewhere" to find it!

Millie and I were at a Pow Wow that Millie's tribe was sponsoring and I was helping her grand-dad cut meat. He was kind of ticked because the only ones that would help him was the village drunk and myself. He was asked how it was going and he said, "All I could get to help me was this drunk and this white-eyes." So I came up with Wyteyes for my pickup license plate and everybody had a good laugh about it.
