Ok BOTL/SOTL I am looking for some help here...I have been "getting" a lot of movies and TV series downloaded to my computer and now I want to burn them to a disc. I would like to know what a good program would be to burn from my hard drive to a DVD. Thanks

I agree about Nero. It's what I use to burn CD's. Haven't tried it for DVD's.

I use Nero, but I don't think it will burn copyrighted DVDs (movies), tho I'vr never tried it.

i use studio 321 dvd x copy express. about 25 minutes to rip and almost the same time to burn.

it will only burn one copy at a time. when you are done burning you must erase the files that say dvd express or something like that, not the program.

the file to erase has an audio and a video filter and some notes. i have never been able to burn more then one dvd at a time from an original.

i use a 200 gig external hard drive because it needs a lot of storage to rip. i turn off the computer after each copy to clear the memory and after three copies, you need to defrag the drive. the copies are perfect, but it will not copy the extras on the original dvd.

it uses almost all you memory so don't try to use the computer when it's working.

Rick,

I have DVD XCopy Express as well. I haven't used it since 321 got closed up.

I am using a newer computer, not the one that I installed it on. Since their Install required activating it over the internet, and they are out of biz, I don't think it will work.

It was a VERY nice program while it lasted, however...

can't you copy the files, already registered, to the new computer?

the program is still available for purchase from cad, which i guess is canada.

i'm going to copy my program to toby's computer. she doesn't have a dvd burner, but if the program opens i assume it would copy with a dvd burner.

if it does, i'll send you the cd i copy it to if you want.

i will post what happens.

If you are going to try to rip copyrighted DVDs, be sure to get something with the decryption tools required, like DVD Cloner II or DVD X Copy.

I use DVD Shrink from dvdshrink.org

It will create an ISO file you can burn with Nero or Roxio. If you do not have software that will burn an ISO file to a DVD, get DVD Decrypter, it will do burning chores. It can also copy DVDs, but Shrink allows you to lose 'extra' files, i.e., foreign language, comments etc., to make the ISO small enough to fit on a burnable DVD. You will find lots of info/'how to instructions' by using the applications in Google.

DVD Shrink and Decrypter are freeware.

To answer the original question, if you have XP it has Windows Movie Maker that will import most video files and allows you to edit them then burn them to DVD or VCD.

If you have something else, you will need to find some video editing software, often bundled with a video capture/fire wire cards.

It will depend on the format the file is saved as (WMP, MEPG1,2 VCD etc). As Gene said, XP will allow the conversion, or Download.com/C-net/ZDnet have free utilities to accomplish this. Be careful though, some of the free utilities have adware/spyware imbedded in them - so do a little research. You can always go to Compusa or Fry's and find an ambitious clerk to help you out - they sell programs that will do everything for you for under $50.

On another note, if you want to copy an original DVD including all the extras, DVD X Copy platnium works great. I've been using a copy that was given to me for the last 2 years. Been a few I have not been able to back up, but most work fine. Email if interested - but you must have XP.

www.videohelp.com

The best site for such information. They also have links to free editing programs if you want to audit them and create menus. Lots of GREAT info on the forums about this.

Rick,

Thanks for the offer, but I don't need a copy (I think:-)

I have the original CD I purchased from 321, as well as several versions I downloaded from them before they went belly-up (thanks to our lobby friends in DC...)

I've not tried to install it on the new computer because I didn't think the "Activation" would work. The website you posted suggests it might, however, so I'll give that a shot.

Thanks again
