I finally was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. Odd that someone as adept with technology as myself would resist it.

Now I find myself a stranger in a strange land. These things have some serious capabilities.

I got a Motorola through Verizon and was given the 10 minute speil that wen in one ear and out the other.

Does any B/SOTL have any suggestions/warnings about these gizmos? Something really handy they wished someone had told them earlier?

Etiquette: Remember to turn your ringer and/or phone off when in public buildings, meetings, restaurants, movies, etc.

Learning the features: Just start playing around with it. Work your way through the menu with the user manual by your side, and you'll have it figured out in no time.

Welcome to the '90s!!!

Thanks for the reply Ryan,

My son learned something when we puchased it even though he had his for a while. Every coupla months, press *228 to get the latest cell tower info for better operation and less battery depletion. I guess there is too much to learn to point to one or two things. Like you said, I will learn by playing with it.

But I am so ignorant of the thing, it will be more error than trial, methinks.

Never heard of the *228 function. That's interesting. Which service is that? Cingular? Sprint? Verizon?

I worked for a Cell phone company for a couple of years. 9 times out of 10, any issue you are having with your phone can be solved by removing the battery ( while the phone is still turned on ), waiting about 30 seconds then replacing it and turning it back on.

This will power-cycle the phone ( update your cell location, make any network updates that are needed, etc.. ).

Oh... smoking a cigar, drinking coffee and driving all at the same time is hazardous to your health!

Mark: I do this probably 3 times a week just by dropping my phone. Man, I beat the crap out of it.

Don't talk on it while you're driving. It will make most people want to kill you.

The people that won't want to kill you will be too busy talking on THEIR cell phones... jack-azzes

I've had many cell phones. Just learn what functions are pertinent to you. As things arise just call 611 and they will train you from the sevice desk. Verizon has the best service and service people i've ever dealt with.

Unless maybe you need to hide it quick...

Or if you have an itch that you just can't seem to scratch.

Seems like those are two possible times when it would be ok. Just don't put the mouthpiece too near your face upon removal.

okay, now you need three things (and I'm stealing this from Dave Attell):

-a pair of tongs

-a bottle of whiskey

-a friend that can keep a secret.

my advice is to ditch it right away!!!

I had them for years and I finally got rid of it last year. I swear the thing is like a homing device for work/wife. God knows how we managed without these things! I just don't need to be that "connected" with everyone.

Guess what I got for my B-day last October??? A new cell phone from my wife.

:(

andytv I can relate. My wife thinks I'm absent minded because I keep "accidently" leaving my phone at home or in the car. oops.

1. buy a head set that goes over your head, not just the one that hangs in your ear. then you can look at the phone while you are dialing and still hear what is going on. about $30.00 and get a charge that works in your car. you don't want to call aaa with a flat tire by yelling out the window,

2. don't give anyone your phone number and leave it off unless "you" want to make a call.

3. never make a call if you are driving a car.

4. forget all the features, use it as a phone, just like the one on your desk. it isn't a camera or a video or an answering machine. it isn't permission for people to bother you when you are in the toilet.

5. hide it in the car. there is nothing you are going to see that necessatates calling anyone on the spot. if you see something interesting, tell someone about it when you get home.

6. don't you and your wife carry it in the grocery store so you can tell each other that apples are on sale in isle 4.
