finished movin today,pulled out my new lap top!! new neighborhood,and donot have any net serv!!!???? decided too try and connect for **** and giggles,and sure as hell,here i am with xcellent connection from someones unguarded wireless connection!!!!!???????? 1st time for everything!!!!! whats the deal with all the wireless stuff and how does one go about too protect themselve????? need some help from the geek squad!!!!?????????

You protect it through your router software. If you don't have a router then you are wide open to other people seeing what you are looking at. Hopefully you have a firewall installed on your Laptop.

-Turn off Broadcasting of your network Name if it's your wireless service

-USE MAC address filtering. Basically only allows the computers you specify to use your service.

Still holes in wireless...but those are the best things you can do...and you should use all of them. It still won't be completely secure...but those 4 things I believe are about as secure as you can make wireless at a 'home consumer' level.

If you have a choice, use WPA security instead of WEP. It is more secure.

I can log on to 3 of the ones that show up on my screen. One of which is mine. Mine however is not broadcasted and is backed by the highest encryption avaliable on my router. The strength of the signal is also set low so it stays within my home.
