Happy Cinco de Mayo all! America turns another significant date in history, and turns it into an excuse to aprty.

Any plans? I'll be at Redheads in eatontown, NJ shooting pool, drinking and smoking cigars. Anyone in the area feel free to join us. I'll be there between 9 and 9:30pm.

Sfraun04

eatontown just sent a chill down my spine.

in the 6th grade, my family moved from queens, new york, to tinton falls, nj. i went from PS 83 to a tinton falls 4 room school where some of the kids rode their horses to school. 1945 0r 46. went to red bank high and graduated in 1950.

we lived in the alfred vail homes a few miles from fort monmouth and eatontown.

we used to go to a place in eatontown that sold coal.

at night we would sneak in the second floor of the coal chutes and capture the wild pigeons to raise babies.

i think that time frame was the best of my childhood.

city boy in a rowboat crabbing in the shrewsbury river and selling them for a dollar a dozen.

wow. i must stop, go outside, smoke a cigar, and remember that time once again.

Do they celebrate July 4th in Mexico?

Do they celebrate ANY American holiday in Mexico?

Didn't think so.

I'm proud to be an AMERICAN!!!

No they do not celebrate any of our holidays, except cinco de mayo did affect the civil war. Maybe that is why we celebrate it. Happy Cinco De Mayo! From a proud American.

We celebrate it here in Socal because most folks here ARE Mexican.

And as was previously stated... it's an excuse to party.

RDC, this may be interesting to you. I am married to a Mexican citizen. She was confused as to why we celebrate cinco de mayo. In her home town they do not celebrate it (except, it is a work holiday, sort of like president's day... and following the analogy, we don't really have president's day parties). The celebration is really most appropriate for the people of Puebla, where the battle took place. It is not the equivalent of our 4th of July. Some may argue that it does present a reason for Americans to celebrate, because the Mexicans repelled, what was basically a French invasion. So, they saved us from having hostile Frech troops just south of our border. On the other hand, when have we ever been concerned with the French? 🙂 On the other hand, it does represent a good excuse to drink tequila and eat tamales.

05/05/05! Anybody play the lottery? Perhaps a take five ticket. They have those here in NY. I should probably have gotten one. Aw shucks! Sfraun saw your note on another post about how you used to live up by me in NY. Check this out! I grew up in Rumson, NJ. To say that I wished I still lived there is a HUGE understatement. I have the best memories & stories about the Glory Days. Springsteen Rocks. OOOPS gotta run out the door my daughter is having an art show that we almost forgot about.

moonman -- I was going to post that 05/05/05 thing myself. A co-worker just informed me, but I should have just kept my eyes on the misc. forum.

I posted this before a long time ago, but I still like it.

------------------------------

Most people don’t know that back in 1912 Hellman’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. The Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico which was to be the next port of call for the ship after New York City. The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today. It is known as Sinko De Mayo.

I took the Mrs. to the local Cinco De Mayo resturant for supper... good food and everyone was partying... we left before it got way to crowded... and I didn't have a cigar all day... still trying to kick this cough bug (wood dust) from the other night...
