I'm packing the motorcycle and heading south. I am traveling with no place to be and no time to get there. Just six days of time off and the road to lead me.

I live in Washington and hope to make California, at some point, but I'll leave Wednesday, May 18th and won't be back home until May 25th. Might even go to Las Vegas or Reno, I don't know. I've already started packing and have all kinds of cool twisty roads highlighted on my maps. Eat you heart out! LOL

Sorry Dave, but I'm making no plans to stop anywhere. If I feel like stopping I'll stop, but I'm not going to hold myself to any set schedule and I'm leaving my watch and all communication type devices at home. If anyone hears from me, it will only be for bail money! lol

I would plan on more than a week. Maybe a month. That way if you like someplace, you can stay a day or two without wondering if you can be back when you are supposed to.

Ahhhh that sounds so nice.

I don't know if you got a Radio on your Bike?? I never had... just the wind and the songs in my head... these were a couple Favs that always popped up.. the second one usually because it was raining or starting to and I was already committed to the Ride!!!

TRAVELIN’ MAN

Up with the sun, gone with the wind,

She always said I was lazy.

Leavin’ my home, leavin’ my friends,

Runnin’ when things get too crazy.

Out on thr road, out ’neath the stars,

Feelin’ the breeze, passin’ the cars.

Women have come, women have gone,

Everyone tryin’ to cage me.

Some were so sweet, I barely got free,

Others, they only enraged me.

Sometimes at night, I see their faces,

I feel the traces they left on my soul.

Those are the memories that made me a wealthy soul.

Travelin’ man, love when I can,

Turn loose my hand ’cause I’m goin’.

Travelin’ man, catch if you can,

But sooner or lare I’m goin’.

Travelin’ man ... travelin’ man, yes I am.

Sometimes at night, I see their faces,

I feel the traces they left on my soul.

These are the memories that made me a wealthy soul.

These are the memories that made me a wealthy soul.

TURN THE PAGE

On a long and lonesome highway, east of omaha.

You can listen to the engine moaning out it’s one lone song

You can think about woman, or the girl you knew the night before,

But your thoughts will soon be wandering, the way they always do.

When your riding sixteen hours and there’s nothing much to do

And you don’t feel much like riding, you just wish the trip was through.

Say, here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.

Here I go, playing star again.

There I go, turn the page.

Well you walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road,

You can feel the eyes upon you as your shaking off the cold

You pretend it doesn’t bother you, but you just want to explode.

Most times you can’t hear em talk, other times you can.

Oh the same old cliche, as that woman on her a man

You always see my number, you don’t dare make a stand.

Here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.

Here I go, playing star again.

There I go, turn the page.

Out there in the spotlight your a million miles away,

Every ounce of energy, you try and give away,

As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play.

Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed,

With the echo from the amplifiers ringing in your head,

You smoke the days last cigarette, remembering what she said.

Now here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.

Here I go, playing star again.

There I go, turn the page.

Here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.

Ah here I go, playing star again.

There I go, there I go.

Thom, You sound like you've made the best plans... no phones... no schedule...no point to point check in advance... I did a trip like that back in 1996.. 3,600 miles round trip... the only problem was I had my ex wife on the back.... and she was always trying to change the plans or make a set destination.. and every frickin time we stopped somewhere's, she had to buy a pair of frikin shoes and a T-Shirt... we ended up stopping off someplace in South Dakota to mail most her purchases home LOL

When we made it to Montana and I seen the no speed limit signs, I opened the bike up and let it eat.. I got bruises on my ribs from her (ex) jabbing me screaming slow down, slow down this thing has to get us home!!! Simple.. it got us out here, it will get us home now STFU before I put yer azz on a plane and I finish the vacation myself... 13 days on the road and 3,600 round trip...

if you don't have fuel injection and your getting up in high altitudes.. run the cheaper Octain fuel... high octain knocks down your performance on the motor and also runs raw fuel out the pipes 87 or less will work just fine...

I used to shove 1700-1800 miles in a 3 day weekend camping off in the woods from Interstates LOL... MRE's and bottled water!!!

Good Luck and Have a Safe Trip!!!!

...pick up a copy of Pirsig's "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance" after your trip, and the book will actually make sense. If you read it before, it'll lose you.

Take photo's Thom.

Thanks for all the great tips and information.

Hog-- I've tried to ride with music, but I prefer the solitude of the wind and the road noise. But one of my favorite "in head showcases" is Chameleon by Herbie Hancock. Lots of room for improv.

This is not my first trip of this type nor will it likely be my longest. Last June two buddies and myself went from Ellensburg, WA. to Indianapolis, over 2300 miles in 51 hours. 2000 miles in 48 hours is known as a Saddlesore 2000. We are now all members of the I.B.A. (Iron Butt Association) by completing, and documenting, this trip. 5300 miles round trip.

2 years ago I bought my current bike, a 2000 Kawasaki Concours, my second one, off of e-Bay and flew to Albuquerque N.M. to pick it up and rode it home. I came up through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and hit Yellow Stone and Glacier Nat. Parks (Glacier is absolutely amazing BTW). I think I did that one in 5 days.

adroomi -- I read that book years ago and have read it many times since. It is coming apart now. A great journey book, but it never did tell me how to fix that intake valve. haha

Always have a camera with me and photo stops are part of the journey. I will post the creme of the crop.

Okay, now I'm really getting excited...
