if you use the ie they have a site to download a beta version called antispywar beta 1. it is free.

that has kept me clean

i also use webroot spy sweeper and norton and registry mechanic.

i don't know which one is better, but i seem to have no spyware. i would guess the microsoft beta 1 is the best.

This $#!t sucks. We have a desktop with WIN2K and a laptop with XP, and they're both infected with different bugs. The XP has an IE hijacker which has resisted all attempts to remove it, and the 2K is being bogged down by something--it takes 13 minutes to boot it up from dead cold, and everything after that is slower than molasses. We've tried everything: NAV, Hijackthis, Adaware SE, Spybot, Spyware Sweeper, Spywareinfo's online scanner, the new one from MS... I'm starting to face the distinct possiblity of a clean reinstall.

cigarrick,

are you booting into safe mode when booting up? Most times you will need to do this to fully remove any executeables.

I can't believe I am about to say this... It's really not to difficult to open up the PC and install a new hard drive.

Then of course, you have to load all the software, which takes a while... but it is better than paying some shop hundreds of $'s to do it when you can do it for what it will cost you for the hard drive, depending on size.

I have downloaded and used everyone of these you guys suggested and it is still not catching what ever this is that is left on her computer.

I need to wipe out the hard drive, but she is freaking out because she cannot replace so of the programs she has on here. I am afraid to save them to another hard drive in fear that it might infect that one as well.

Hope Hog will still love me when I am bald. I am going to tear all my hair out trying to solve this damn problem..LOL

I want to clarify... I am not supporting the F'ing A-holes who perpetuate these worms, bugs, viruses, spyware etc. Just saying that it isn't too difficult to fix yourself, if you are so inclined.

Hell, the dude you take it to, to get it fixed, is probably the same jagoff who sent you the virus.

Who knows?

What I've done in the past to get rid of hijackers and their .dll's is to....

1)run adaware and get it's exact location. You can run a search from the "Start" but you're doing 2 things...finding it and making sure there's nothing new!

2)Once you have the location, find the .dll associated with the program/s.

3)change the .dll to .dl1.

4)deselect and remove all of the offending garbage that Adaware found.

5)restart the computer.

6)delete the offending .dl1 file.

7)run adaware again.

8)restart the computer.

Email me before you go through the headache of reinstalling the OS.

After you get this resolved, ask your daughter how she thinks the virus/spyware got there in the first place. No need to go through all this agony only to have this process repeat itself a month or two later.

Is it websearch? Because that is nearly impossible to remove. But you can actually go to their website and get a tool that will uninstall it (sounds fishy, but it is legit.) This page will give you some info and maybe help you with this and perhaps others. You can try cwshredder and search for that also, it is made for removing browser hijack software.

Tosh did not have an antivirus program installed nor a firewall. It was open and free game.

I have installed all of this for her.

Now my programs keep saying that the virus that is still on the computer is:

Trj/Downloader.BJG

Browser Help Object

Now I have went in and located this...changed the file name like you suggested and deleted it..with no luck.

It keeps coming back up when I restart the computer. The virus detector and the adaware program both say they have neutralized it but it is not working.

Any suggestions??

some of these require an edit of your registry to completely clean them off.

. . . . another prob w/hijackers, is when you type in a site such as www.lavasoft.com (makers of adaware), the hijacker actually brings you to a different site, spamming some other anti-adware software . . . . so once you have it, it's tough to use your own browser to fix it . . . . . one thing that might help, is if you use a different computer to download Adaware, Stinger & Spybot, and then install them from a disk . . . .
