Just curious what everyone's take is on this.

My question is where were the chaperones?? Shouldn't they have been watching out for these kids?

That was the same question I asked when I first read the story. The other question I have is, how much are the parents going to sue the school district for?

exactly, my mom and I were discussing this sitting outside last evening. I said if I were the parents I'd sue the crap out of them whether this has a happy ending or not. I think it will be a cold day in hell before this school takes another class trip like this one. My mom keeps saying she blames the girls that were with the missing one for leaving her and I'm like what were they supposed to do - they were probably hosed themselves. She said they could have called the chaperones and I'm like if the chaperones weren't paying attention in the first place they were probably out partying themselves - was obvious they didn't care what was going on. They need to learn the definition of chaperone!

just correct me if I'm wrong....

1. 18 year old girl goes on school trip.

2. sneaks out of hotel room after "lights out" to meet guys she met on trip.

3. ends up dead.

4. It's the schools fault?

give me a break.

I still wonder why an 18 YO student would sneak out to hook up with 3 boys she just met. I hope I raise my daughter better than that.

I also have a hard time with the fact that they have not found her.

I'm wondering why any school would let 18 year old boys and girls go to places like this for school trips. To me it is just asking for trouble. As my mom put it they went to Washington DC for their class trip and if they had any "parties" it was done in the hotel room and back then their "parties" didn't involve alcohol and being with people of the opposite sex that they just met. Of course, back then (the 60's) things were different then they are now. And YES Adroomi, I do blame the school. If you were a chaperone on a class trip some place like Aruba or lets say Paris or any place like that are you going to trust those kids? Hell, I'd have a chaperone for each flippin room!

Still Missing, and I would assume she's been traded off as a sex slave in some other part of the world?

Sneaking out to meet someone = Breaking Rules

but I could see how the Parents and this Judicial System could twist it to being the fault of the chapperones...

All good questions and points.

Lemme see now, I'm 18 and looking for independence, so I go to ARUBA with friends. I wouldn't wxpect to possibly get raped or killed while there, but who knows, it could happen. But, I'm 18 and I can take care of myself. Supposedly.

I'm not blaming her or her parents for what happened, but all the risk factors were ignored in this siutation.

No chaperones

No buddy system

Alcohol

Strangers

Unfamiliar surroundings

Reckless behavior

Just some of the risk factors that were ignored.

I hope this comes to a resolution soon, but I'm not optimistic for a happy outcome. My heart goes out to the parents.

Let this be a lesson to all you parents out there. Of course, I don't have to tell anyone that.

ok first let me ask what kind of place is Aruba? Is it a big party place? Lots of clubs, stuff like that which would be enticing to 18 yr olds? Is there drinking age 18 and over or did these kids drink there illegally? Just some questions I'd like answered before I say anything else.

I have to agree with this...

We are a 'sue-happy' society... it isn't the schools fault this young lady died. It's the mother F'ers who killed her who are at fault.

I completely agree. It is not the fault of the school for the girl missing. I, being 18 once, went on spring break with no adults. Things happen, there is no age limit for murder. Unfortunately, it happens everywhere. The girl was old enough to watch herself, she was not the responsiblity of her friends. Nothing happened to anyone else, so apparently the girl made a horrible mistake. Sometimes foolish mistakes are able to be told by the holder, other times we have to learn by example. I am afraid this maybe one of those times. By no means is anyone at fault but the one who chose to get in a car full of strangers.

She is/was 18? Isn't that the leagl age of adulthood? Nobody is responsible for her except herself.

Hog,

Exactly why I wanted the scoop from someone that had been there to know what the nightlife was like. I did the google search route and just got the "nice" part of the nightlife scene n stuff, not what I was really looking for.

Thom,

Maybe so, but this was a school sponsored trip was it not and there were adult chaperones that were there to look after the students right? If it was just the kids going down there to have fun after graduating and this happened then that would be one thing, but these kids were under the responsibility of the school whether they were 18 and considered an adult or not. I don't think any of the parents of those that went thought their kids were on their own down there. Grant it the kids might have snuck off on their own after they were supposed to be in bed, but from the time the kids left their hometown till they stepped foot back in it - they were the responsibility of the school chaperones - IMHO.

Liz62803 -- If you went on a trip last week with chaperones and something happened to you are they responsible for your adult actions?

I understand the point you are making, but I just don't buy into it, that's all.

Another point I wanted to make was that she is not a kid. Although quite young, she is a young adult.
