it's very good . . . if it's accurate. there seems to be a conflict in the way the events are being portrayed. it sort of depends on who is telling you the story.

who do you believe?

A few truths, for those who have ears and eyes and care to know the truth:

1.) The hurricane that hit New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama was an astonishing tragedy. The suffering and loss of life and peace of mind of the residents of those areas is acutely horrifying.

2.) George Bush did not cause the hurricane. Hurricanes have been happening for eons. George Bush did not create them or unleash this one.

3.) George Bush did not make this one worse than others. There have been far worse hurricanes than this before George Bush was born.

4.) There is no overwhelming evidence that global warming exists as a man-made phenomenon. There is no clear-cut evidence that global warming even exists. There is no clear evidence that if it does exist it makes hurricanes more powerful or makes them aim at cities with large numbers of poor people. If global warming is a real phenomenon, which it may well be, it started long before George Bush was inaugurated, and would not have been affected at all by the Kyoto treaty, considering that Kyoto does not cover the world's worst polluters -- China, India, and Brazil. In a word, George Bush had zero to do with causing this hurricane. To speculate otherwise is belief in sorcery.

5.) George Bush had nothing to do with the hurricane contingency plans for New Orleans. Those are drawn up by New Orleans and Louisiana. In any event, the plans were perfectly good: mandatory evacuation. It is in no way at all George Bush's fault that about 20 percent of New Orleans neglected to follow the plan. It is not his fault that many persons in New Orleans were too confused to realize how dangerous the hurricane would be. They were certainly warned. It's not George Bush's fault that there were sick people and old people and people without cars in New Orleans. His job description does not include making sure every adult in America has a car, is in good health, has good sense, and is mobile.

6.) George Bush did not cause gangsters to shoot at rescue helicopters taking people from rooftops, did not make gang bangers rape young girls in the Superdome, did not make looters steal hundreds of weapons, in short make New Orleans into a living hell.

7.) George Bush is the least racist President in mind and soul there has ever been and this is shown in his appointments over and over. To say otherwise is scandalously untrue.

8.) George Bush is rushing every bit of help he can to New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama as soon as he can. He is not a magician. It takes time to organize huge convoys of food and now they are starting to arrive. That they get in at all considering the lawlessness of the city is a miracle of bravery and organization.

9.) There is not the slightest evidence at all that the war in Iraq has diminished the response of the government to the emergency. To say otherwise is pure slander.

10.) If the energy the news media puts into blaming Bush for an Act of God worsened by stupendous incompetence by the New Orleans city authorities and the malevolence of the criminals of the city were directed to helping the morale of the nation, we would all be a lot better off.

11.) New Orleans is a great city with many great people. It will recover and be greater than ever. Sticking pins into an effigy of George Bush that does not resemble him in the slightest will not speed the process by one day.

12.) The entire episode is a dramatic lesson in the breathtaking callousness of government officials at the ground level. Imagine if Hillary Clinton had gotten her way and they were in charge of your health care.

God bless all of those dear people who are suffering so much, and God bless those helping them, starting with George Bush.

**** UPDATE: Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, 2:13 p.m.:

More Mysteries of Katrina:

Why is it that the snipers who shot at emergency rescuers trying to save people in hospitals and shelters are never mentioned except in passing, and Mr. Bush, who is turning over heaven and earth to rescue the victims of the storm, is endlessly vilified?

What church does Rev. Al Sharpton belong to that believes in passing blame and singling out people by race for opprobrium and hate?

What special abilities does the media have for deciding how much blame goes to the federal government as opposed to the city government of New Orleans for the aftereffects of Katrina?

If able-bodied people refuse to obey a mandatory evacuation order for a city, have they not assumed the risk that ill effects will happen to them?

When the city government simply ignores its own sick and hospitalized and elderly people in its evacuation order, is Mr. Bush to blame for that?

Is there any problem in the world that is not Mr. Bush's fault, or have we reverted to a belief in a sort of witchcraft where we credit a mortal man with the ability to create terrifying storms and every other kind of ill wind?

Where did the idea come from that salvation comes from hatred and criticism and mockery instead of love and co-operation?

I live in Stuart Florida, we had a direct hit by 2 hurricanes last September. The responsibility for first response lies with the state government. They were the first to respond here, they were the ones that brought in the first loads of water and ice. The local government was also a large factor in the first response. They identified what was needed and where.

The other first responders were the people that live here, we didn't sit back and wait for some one to do something for us we went out and helped each other get thru by doing what ever needed to be done.

For the arm chair idiots like Nancy Palocy(D-CA) to sit there and take potshots at Bush is out of line. Bush made the resorces available before the storm hit, the people that didn't know what to do were at the state and local level. FEMA didn't get here to Stuart for 5 or 6 days after both storms.

Gene,

Nobody said that the fool Bush caused the hurricane......but he did however leave his citizens in peril while he carelessly played guitar.

Kind of like a mother letting her child play near the pool while she watches soaps and when the child dies, saying "well, she didn't fill the pool."

Well I beg to differ, please refer to item 4 for ‘causing’ the hurricane. As for not caring, well that is just crap, we disagree, and so be it. The only thing “stupid” are the things Bush bashers are saying, here and on the TV. As I said before, if he walked on water you would cry that he couldn’t swim.

I am pleased that these obtuse arguments are all you disagree with in the post; there might be hope for you after all.

I disagree with just about the entire post to tell you the truth. It reminds me of something that some fool would email to me on an email chain, and then some other fool would believe every word of and copy and paste it onto this forum.........by the way, where did YOU get this?

The fact is, if this was Bush's first case of standing around with his thumb up his butt when tragedy and lives were being lost in America, I'd forgive him. However, this is the second case.

Fool us once, shame on you.

Fool us twice, shame on us.

The man is an idiot.....you have to admit that.

You posted, "Wow, a timeline from a left wing website. Thom likes it, homebrew says it sounds right, even staunch republicans like adroomi agree."

Doesn't really matter where he dug it up, it does fit the timeline I had been putting together, from reading and watching Foxnews, and CNN, comparing the data between the two, and just basically figuring it out. That does not mean I am pointing the finger at the federal government, State, or local governments. I would just like to see a bipartisan commision investigate all that happened so that our response time to the next disaster, will improve. I don't really care who dropped the ball, but it is definately clear that the ball was dropped.

Homebrew, I am not saying it's accurate or not. Anytime I see a post with no source I credit it to the person posting it. If it said "new York times" at the top, I'd credit it to them (I am a trusting soul). But when Maven posts an anti Bush article I give it as much weight as any of Ricks anti Bush rants. Like I said, we’ll see. I heard the mayor of NO say (i listened to the bite) that the president was ready to move and Blanco needed 24 hours to think it over. I don't see Naggin (sp?) as a pro Bush guy.

The left is very big on yelling loud and fast to get a story out, and then dropping it later as the facts catch up. We'll have to wait and see. You take as always is appreciated. Well, at least by me.

I believe that both sides are equally capable of doing the old bait and switch. It only comes down to people believe the spin, that they want to believe, and disregard the rest, regardless of the truth. I try and not get caught up in the spin, and try and get down to the meat of an issue. I am a libertarian, so I am neither Republican, though I used to be, or democrat. That gives me the opportunity to look at the issues, for substance, not what way it needs to be spun, to benefit my party. My party is extremely conservative, on a fiscal level, but way liberal on the social issues.

I just want the government to be less intrusive in our lives. I also wish that the major political parties, would quit selling this country to the highest bidder. But that is another thread.

Have a great day.

I hate to say this, but I was a republican, and I left the party because they are just like the democrats, except the republicans, when they don't like a rule they just threaten to change the rules ie filibuster rules.

If they don't like the way an investigation is turning out, ie whitewater, they change the focus, what did a **** have to do with the whitewater land development that was being investigated.

Also, if the american people don't believe your reasons for takinmg us to war in Iraq, War on Terror, change the reason, to WMD. Oooops no WMD, OK we are there for the Iraqi people.

I used to hate the democrats, and would swallow the party line whole, like many do here. But then I recognised them as just better at hiding their dirt, and being hypocritical. So I dumped their sorry ASH, and joined the Libertarians, and started attacking both major parties. But I still vote for the majors, in the presidential elections, until the libertarians control the local governments they have no chance on a federal level.

Just my .02, but even though I never voted for Clinton, I believe he was a much better president than GWB. He just got caught lying about a ****. Much better than the lies GWB, would have us believe.

Like I said,
