i have never seen these on the auction. have you? i really like the enchantments, i have paid 12 to 18 dollars for them retail and was hoping to land a five pack here.

VSG, virgin sun grown appellation is tacked on to a number of brands: excatly what does that mean?

What does virgin sun grown mean??
Means it was grown in the sun and it's under 18 years old.

Sun Grown is a term used to describe any tobacco that is not grown beneath shade. Most filler tobaccos are sun grown plants.

However, the term is most commonly applied to advertise wrapper leafs that have not been grown beneath shade.

Typically wrapper plants are sowed and nutured in fields that are tented entirely beneath huge expanses of muslin cloth. This cloth helps to greatly diffuse the sunlight resulting in silky wrapper leaves that are thinner in texture with much smaller veins. These qualities are highly desirable in good wrappers.

Yet in Ecuador this tenting is not needed because its tobacco growing regions are famous for their dense, near constant cloud cover. Here nature provides the shade required to produce beautiful wrapper leaf without the use of any muslin cloth, and in turn the leaves are referred and advetised as being "sun grown."

Basically, all Ecuador Sumatran and Ecuador Connecticut wrappers are sun grown.

Try the Occidental Havana Sun growns...They're about $70-$80 a box (about $4 a stick here in IL.) and they are a great smoke!...Very rich flavor!...Mild in strength but chock-ful of flavor!

Eleltea is right about “Sun Grown”. Virgin means that it was grown in soil that has never been planted with tobacco before. Whereas plain "Sun Grown" will be as described except from a field that has produced tobacco before.

great info here...i don't know what it is about sun grown, but it's my cigar of choice; although, i've had some sun grown 'gars that were about as good as lone wolfs...

Sun-grown wrappers are obviously grown in full sun. When a plant grows, it turns the suns rays into sugars through photosynthesis, which in turn, feeds the plant.

Those leaves will be much stronger, thicker (tougher) leaves, which is why they are used as wrappers.

In addition ... they are much more flavorful ... due to the increased sugar content.

there are also a good number of smokes out there, that left to a little humi-time, would be very near those nice VSGs. don't get me wrong; i love my VSGs; it's just that they are special occasion smokes; good sun grown gars out there are Oliva O, Fuente Chateau in sun grown, El Rico, IP, to mention a few.

I know that the V in VSG stands for virgin, meaning in this case, that tobacco had not been grown in that particular soil before, but am wondering what characteristics this adds to plain ol' sun-grown ... anybody??

i'm guessing it has to do with what Slimboli posted; not sure but almost every premium sun grown (that i've mentioned above) has been really tasty and fairly full-bodied with the exception of only a few; sorry can't remember those. i've also found that my sun grown gars age mo betta and take less humi-time to boot so i can enjoy them quicker.

The first time any plant is grown it takes certain nutrients out of the soil, so every time after that there are less and less of those specific nutrients in the soil. This is why crop rotation is so important for farmers because different plants use different mixtures of nutrients, without the rotation the land can become devoid of nutrients and thus worthless for planting. So the first, or virgin, crop is more prime because the soil is teeming with nutrients.



Did you guys ever notice what product a lot of cigar companies also grow??? Coffee, by rotating tobacco and coffee the farmers keep the soil usable to produce quality tobacco over an extended period of time.

The fact that it's the first time in the soil for that particular plant, what that means many of the natural micro-nutrients needed by that particular plant have not been depleted yet, so it will grow stronger and be a healthier plant ...

Once you have grown a particular crop one season, it is best to rotate to another crop. Each particular crop gives and takes certain things from the soil.

This can be corrected with fertilizers, of course ... but it is doubtful that is is done on a regular basis in poorer countries.
