Are these type of things any good? I bought a small one this weekend and was just wondering what everyone else thought of them.

The best one that I have used in the Drymistat Tube. That's the one where you use regular tap water, and it will last up to 4 months. You actually fill it with water, and place it in your humidor.

The DHS Disposable Humidification Sticks (IMHO) are worthless ...

Yeah ... that's them (mine had blue caps with a clear tube), just as long as you are not talking about the DHS Disposable Humidification Sticks. They are solid black tubes, and come pre-moistened, and don't work very well after about a month. I tried refilling mine by running water through them ... but they don't seem to work very well.

I guess thats why they call them 'disposable' ...

Slim, If they worked well for a month then they did their job. They sound like a good thing to stick in a travel humidor. You gonna try to put new filaments in your burned out light bulbs next. LOL

GetYourOwn --- the Drymistat tubes last for up to four months, and can be refilled with tap water over and over again. Why waste your money on disposible ones that last only a month?

I like the "climax" tubes...refillable too.

Those are the best ... and before anyone goes on a 'threadjacking' spree, they are called 'Climmax' tubes ... 😉

I agree with Slim on the DHS sticks.. worthless. I make my own- for whatever purpose.. traveldors etc. It is so easy to match the size/shape to your situation.

Buying green wet oasis foam (they use it for floral arrangements) is the best!..Cheap too!...II know that many of you oldtimers already make them..Just sharing it with the newbies!)

i offered you a cutter and a punch and now i will make my last offer. an article that everyone here is familiar with. it will tell you all you want to know about humidity and how to maintain it.

I make my own as well.

I start with 1/2" thin walled PVC piping cut to desired length 6"
Take two end caps (non-threaded) and drill three 1/32" holes in a triangle as near to the center as feasibly possible on each one
I then soak (in a 50/50 mixture of distilled water & PG) Polymer Crustals (hydrogels - crystals that absorb several times their weight in water - white/clear in color and can be purchased at any landscaping/plant store (once they absorb water they look like globs of clear jello)
I then use the end caps to 'punch' plugs of the green florist bricks (already cut to a 3/4" thickness) and soak then in the same solution.
Place one green plug into a cap, placed cap upside down on table (while wife isn't looking) and tap the pipe/tube snugly into the cap
Now fill tube with hydrated jello crystals (leave 3/4" minimum from top for other cap
Now place green plug in other cap and tap onto other end of pipe.
Works great for about a month for up to 25 sticks in a used cedar cigar box or other types of travel humidors .....
p.s. You can also recharge them and they're less than $2.00 each to make (cheaper to make in bulk).

Also I do not have a humidor right now. When I bought the tube I mentioned in this post the guy at the cigar store gave me a nice wooden box. How long will my cigars keep in this box with the humidifcation tube. Probably not as long as a real humidor right?

wbslngr, it all depends on the seal of the box and how many times you open it. It will vary. IMO

wbslngr...If you are REALLY just starting out then either get yourself a real humidor, at least a 50 count, or just go buy a small cooler, aka an igloodor. The coolers are the easiest to make into a humidor. You just get a humidifier or make one out of the green oasis from a florist shop and you are there. Of course you can put some spanish cedar in it for ambiance and aroma, this is not actually required. Use a 50/50 solution and it will keep at 70% humidity.

As most of us started out with just a few cigars and ended up with several humidors and igloodors my advice to you is "think big" now....69

Or instaed of a cooler, just a large plastic storage container. Really dont need a cooler's insulating function. They come in all sizes for any need. Much cheaper too. Personal preference I guess. Just make sure your seal is not airtight. IMO

Fubar69 --- a fully-lined Spanish cedar interior will allow your cigars to continue to mature and age, so it is necessary to put some cedar linging in the coolerdor ... or they won't age properly.
