Three college girls want to buy a radio that is on sale for $30. They each chip in $10 to purchase the radio. After the girls leave the store with their new radio, the manager of the store tells the salesperson who sold the radio to the girls that the radio was actually on sale for $25. The manager then tells the salesperson to return the $5 he overcharged the girls when they purchased the radio.
The salesperson realizes that the girls cannot spit $5 equally between the three of them. So, he decides to keep $2 and returns only $3 to the girls. This way each girl receives $1 and he keeps the remaining $2 for himself.
Now, examine the transactions that have occurred. The girls originally spent $10 each. This amount totals to the $30 they paid for the radio. However, the girls were overcharged by $5. This caused the salesperson to remove $5 from the cash register in order to give it back to the girls. Remember that the salesperson did not want to cause problems between the girls so he kept $2 of the $5. This way the $3 he gave back to the girls could be easily split between the three friends. Since each girl received $1 back, each girl only spent $9. Three girls spent $9 each which would total to $27. Then if this $27 is added to the $2 the salesperson kept, the sum is $29 and not the original $30.
Where did the extra dollar go???
