I have just recently purchased a 90 qt cooler and have converted it into a coolerdor. I have layered most of the inside with pieces of Spanish Cedar from cigar boxes that I have collected. Now my problem is a strong plastic smell I get from the interior of the cooler. My question is, will this smell go away and if not will it have any effect on my cigars..
Thanks

did you wash the inside real good before you put the cedar in? you may want to try putting a box of baking soda inside for a week before you place your smokes in.

How did you stick the cedar to the cooler? If you didn't use non-toxic odor free adhesive then you just wasted some money!!

Actually I used velcro so I could move the pieces around. I would guess that the glue on the back is
non-toxic.. Either way I can still remove the pieces
pretty easily...

Has anyone used Velcro to attach the cedar? Just a thought...or maybe it's adhesive is toxic too?

Ok, I see that you did. don't know how my post came after yours...or maybe I just skipped over it...

The adhesive on velcro is way too stinky. I don't know if it's toxic or not, but it reeks, that's why I avoided it for my coolerdor!

cwilhelmi,
Can you give me a run down on how you built yours, including what you used for materials and any special things you did to treat the cooler..
Thanks,

The plastic smell of the cooler itself should go away after washing and leaving open to dry. Use a mixture of baking soda and water to wash, and rinse well.
If the smell is from the velcro, then it's actually from the adhesive as previously mentioned. But the adhesive itself shouldn't stink, just the volatile carrier which can be evaporated with a hair dryer. It may reduce the adhesion, however, so only do enough to eliminate the odor.
