I have to fly to Anaheim from Oakland this week. I am only going for a couple of days and will not be checking any luggage. Any advise on what not to bring on my carry on. No razor? No metal lighter (plastic ok) Cigar cutter ok? Can of shaving cream, can of deoderant? Any advise from you world travelors will be welcome. Thanks

If you bring a cutter make it a bullet style, and matches would be a better idea. I think a shaving razor as well as shaving cream will be OK. Most of my trips lately have been long enough to warrant checking bags, but back in march I carried a prometheus on with no problem. I've also heard of folks losing two colibris. Good luck...

You probably are not supposed to carry the lighter at all. But a plastic one will not show much on the X-ray.

Cut some cigars before you leave and the topless bars in Anaheim have matches.

packed in your check-in luggage, lighters, cutters, razors, etc are no problem at all ...

in carry-on, whatever they decide is a problem, IS ... even your nail clipper ... don't bother to take the plastic lighter ... your good lighter will be ok in the check-in luggage and the Bic will be confiscated in the carry-on, if found ...

I took the course of least resistance and put all that stuff in the check in luggage ... worked out fine. (and I was flying Southwest, which is almost certainly what you're doing on the flight you describe)

I just flew to and from Vegas las week. You can cannot carry any razors,nail clippers,tweezers,cutters and flasks W/booze on carry on. They made me pour out my flask. I did have a bottle of champagne,so I guess unopened bottles are OK. However,I was able to take wooden matches from Vegas to SandyEggo. X

Coming back from Houston, I forgot my cheapie light in my pocket and they took that.

Checked bags are OK for anything. Carry ons are different. You cannot carry on the cigar cutter. A bullet may get by but I wouldn't take anything you value. They will confiscate and you don't get them back. When I travel now, I'm pre cutting and using matches. Other option is to find a cigar store and ask them to clip them for you. If you tell the guy your traveling, they usually are OK with you not buying your smokes there and it is a chance to meet some new people to hang with. I had a bullet cutter removed from my carry on early on and lost it to security in SFO. Razors are OK and even most nail clippers have been given the OK. It's on an airport by airport basis.

They will take the bullet cutters too! I simply go to a cigar bar or cigar shop and buy a cheapo cutter for the stay!

If the bullet cutter is on your key chain I wouldn't worry! I've done it 5 time this year, and like I said, take matches!

Throw away razors are ok because the blade is not removable. The FAA rule says no cutting tools of any kind, so they interpret that to include plastic guillotine cigar cutters. They have one of mine. Fingernail clippers with the little file goodie that has a sort of hook on the end is okay, but not if the file is straight and pointed. The rules are typical govt: FUBAR.

Each time I've flown since all the added security got added, I've talked to the screeners and asked about the stuff I'd rather have had in my pockets, but put in my check-in luggage out of fear of confiscation ... the variation in their answers has shown me that the biggest problem with the whole damn issue is that IF there is an actual set of rules or guidelines, not only do none of the travelers seem to know what they are, neither do the screeners ...

you'll end up being treated differently at various airports AND by individual screeners within the SAME airport ... to me, THAT's the biggest headache of all ... you're at the mercy of the individual screeners who are out there calling their own plays and just winging it on the field instead of going by a "book of plays" set up and decided upon by the coach ...

Plus ... if you bought your ticket fairly close to flight time, show any nervousness or evidence of being under pressure, act as if you're in a hurry, or do any number of litte things, you can also count on being the recipient of added TLC on the part of the screeners ...

Sam, do yourself a big favor ... put your lighter, your cutter, your nail clipper (hell, even your keys) into your check-in luggage ... it's a short flight and you won't be smoking or using any of those things anyway ... hell, you'll be lucky just to get the "snack and beverage" service done before you land ... in fact, if you herf in the car on the way to Oakland, you're not even gonna be ready to light another until well after your arrival in SoCal ... play it safe and you'll have no worry, no headache and no body-scans or confiscated possessions ...

Thanks for all of the good advise. Based on what I've been reading I have decided to check my bag and avoid any hassles. I'll only be carrying on a book and my reading glasses.

Was in Anaheim Wed, Thur and Fri last week. Wife picked me up Fri afternoon and we drove to San Diego to visit #3 daughter at UC. Drove home Sunday.
I had no carry on for the flight and checked bag went through without a hitch. Check in and Security took less that 15 minutes in Oakland.
In SD stayed at a hotel with a balcony which I used to smoke a ERDM torp, a Consuerga toro and a Belinda 1858 while looking out at the Pacific. Life is good.

Oh well,maybe next time.
