LIFE OF PI by Yann Martel. Trust me on this one, you'll be glad you did. you won't be able to put it down, then it'll have you thinking for days.

Oh my God, my persecutors are following me around the internet. The Humanity! You'd think I'd recommended a Harry Potter novel.

I read the Harry Potter books as a preface to my kids reading them. A little juvenile, yeah. But good storytelling. How about "From a Buick 8" by Stephen King? Not his best plot by a longshot. But the guy can sure spin a yarn.

xrd, not implying that the Harry potter novels were bad. Try the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman.

The best for me was actually a series of 19 books starting with "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'Brian. The research and commitment by the author is astounding. A true renaissance man.

Those were very good. You should also read the Horatio Hornblower novels by C.S. Forester. Every bit as good.
