I grabbed a bundle of these when they were on private auction earlier this week. I am very happy I did. I have had a Pinar before I believe it was the sungrown and thought it was fairly good. I had read where alot of people had a good experience with the oscuro so I took a shot.

Being as I am I smoked one ROTT. The wrapper on this was vey dark and had a nice oily sheen. The stick lit easily and burned very well. I like it alot. I was buying them because it was a good price and was hoping for a good yard gar. This stick is much more than that. This is a stick I want to sit down and enjoy as I found it that good. I have no experience with aging Pinar Del Rio sticks but if they age ok at all this should be a fine smoke in about 6 months.

I wish I had grabbed another bundle as the price point was excellent. Abe hit a home run with this smoke. If anyone has had some aged Pinar Del Rio sticks I would be interested in hearing your opinions on the aging potential of them.👍

I've been a fan of PDR, well before they started showing up here. I have a supply of most of them. Clasico, Sungrown, Oscuro, Seleccion, CI's exclusive Limitada and Obsidian, plus the higher end 1878 line in 3 wrappers. These are my "go to" everyday type smoke, and aging won't hurt them, but it really dosen't make them much better. The only ones I don't like are the now gone '07 vintage blend that where being auctioned off around here. Don't know if it was the blend, or if they where stored badly, but they where total dog rockets, and do not represent the current offerings from PDR.

+1, down to the last detail. The 2007 Limitada was a bland bust. The PDR 1878 lines smoke like top-shelf cigars and all have good flavor. The Reserva Limitada is an excellent smoke. I have had Oscuro's resting naked in my big maduro box for 2 weeks all the way up to 8 months. After the standard 4 to 6 weeks most cigars need to marry, the PDR Oscuro tastes maybe a tad better. Still get the same, good, chocolatey maduro flavor. And after 6 to 8 months, maybe a TINY BIT smoother, but as far as the flavor base goes, their is no real change. Start smoking them after 4 weeks. Set 5 aside to age a bit. Push the cigar down to the open end of the cello wrapper. Then clip off the excess of the closed end. You keep the jacket on to protect the wrapper. Then tuck them away for 4 to 6 months and you will see what I mean.

Im sorry but I couldn't disagree more.

I tried several of the 1878 product line when it first showed up on CI about 6 months ago or so....

I still have a few sitting.....seeing if they get any better with age.

My conclusion, not a full fledged "dog rocket"

BUT

I for damn sure wont be buying anymore.

These are not a premium cigar.

The oscuro is a wana-be flavor bomb, that falls far short and gives me a headache.

This comes from a guy that can go for a decent budget oscuro (i.e. La Herencia Cubana Oscuro Fuerte)

This line IMO is just another marketing ploy to get the budget crowd to buy another box.

Me......I would just smoke less and buy a better smoke.

Uh, not to be a smartarse, but the PDR 1878 line has NEVER, EVER been available here or at CI. I don't know what you where smoking, but it's not these.

Here's an image of the 1878 Capa Maduro.

I have handed out these to several board vets, and some liked them so much that they have gone out and payed full Internet price for a box.

Easy to do with so many similar sounding names out there. I personally agree with your assessment of the 1844 line, as I strongly dislike them, but there are many here who enjoy them, and it’s not my place to tell them that they shouldn’t. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

I guess I would have to agree. It goes to show that all of us have an opinion and we will all never agree on cigars.

I like the PDR line. I smoked a Sun Grown yesterday and liked it very much. I also like the Oscuro lie as well. I don't care much for Obsidian. Just because one does not like a particular cigar, does not mean it sucks and should be considered a "dog rocket".

"without variety, you wouldn't have a horse race"

I forget who said that.........
