Funny you should say that.... my grandparents on my dads side had to leave Ireland in a hurry one day...

And my grandparents on my mothers side had to leave Czechoslovakia in 1948 because of the Communist coup.

Growing up as a kid my entire family threw Beef and Beer fundraisers every Friday for years and all the money went back to Ireland. The FBI regularly questioned people in my family for years too... I got to overhear them one time asking my grandfather about gun triggers and other parts that were getting shipped over seas but they could never catch him red handed. When I joined the Air Force I had one hell of a time getting my Top Secret and Special Category clearances, I worked in the comm center so a lot of classified material laying around.

He was a funny old guy too... once he started drinking you could forget understanding a word he said because he would get drunk and slip back into speaking Gaelic and all he would do is sing in Gaelic all night long until he passed out. Or repeat over and over "Tiocfaidh ár lá" meaning Our Day will Come ie. a free Ireland. But more than the English he hated the Orangemen etc... Irish people who stayed Loyal to the Queen of England and were glad to be a part of the so called "British Empire" and God forbid you ever EVER mentioned Michael Collins. We had a friend named Michael Collins ( A very Common Irish name like John Smith) and we would have to tell him to lie about his last name just so we wouldn't get the old guy fired up. Every time I watch that movie (Michael Collins) with Liam Neeson I get fired up.... To this day I still don't know my grandpop's real name. He had to change it when he got out of Ireland so for all I know I'm not really part of the O'Daly clan. Shrug maybe one day with DNA testing we'll be able to trace our family back to our true roots but it's not really that big of a deal for me.... now I want a roast beef sandwich covered in gravy and a Guiness or Bass. Heh best part about being a 16yr old Irish kid at an Irish party is no one noticed us drinking their beer or their Baileys. Anyway Look at me time is over. I hope everyone is having a great day!

I too grew up on a half Irish family. Fortunately it was only half....otherwise I'd have been drinking 100% of the time!!

Unfortunately no. My whole family went there on a trip but I had just gotten a job working for Rohm and Haas a big chemical company and couldn't go. Someday though... I'll get there.
