Hello all

So i am reading a review on Tat The Frank and i see in the write up,

■Size: 7 5/8 inches

■Ring Gauge: 49

■Vitola: Box pressed Double Corona

I thought Vitola was the combination of ring and size (robusto - 5 x 50 ) etc...

But this listing of vitola included the pressing...

Are all three factors taken to determining the vitola and what is actually the listing of the vitola

Would in The Franks case the vitola be considered Double Corona

I am not sure if this makes sense...

Vitola is the cigar in all its incarnations. Length, rg, wrapper, press, blend, everything. Like saying I had a tatuaje last night, would be of no real value to tell some one what you had. You're lucky I'm off today.

Is the vitola something determined by the manufacturer to "categorize" gars or is it a term thrown around by us smokers to do the same?

I realize i am getting to hung up on this term and should shut up and smoke something and forget this line of thinking (as i undobtably will in 5 minutes anyway)

Like saying I drive a Chevy. That's the make. Vitola would be the model including specifics. Chevy silverado 4x4 LTZ black on black 5.3 liter 6 speed trans with chrome 20's.

Tatuaje Nicaraguan black label petite lancero jar release. Vitola is what cigar by the manufacturer, like the black has 7 different vitolas, I believe. If you count the different releases of the pl.

Help? No?

If you wanna see some cool things, Check out Vitola.com. Have every vitola of the opus and some other stuff. Not very interactive, but what's on there is cool.

It has alway been my understanding that vitola referred to only the size in length and ring gauge and it's shape no matter what wrapper or blend was used.

Q: Another cigar catalog recently started using the term " vitola." Until I saw it a few months ago, I had never heard that term. Is it a cigar shape? Just what does vitola mean?

- Joe Oldham in La Quinta, CA

A: According to spanish.dictionary.com, in terms of cigars, it literally means "cigar band." However, as it is used in the cigar business, "vitola" is a cigar factory term for a cigar shape. Corona, Lonsdale, Torpedo, Robusto. et. al. are the names of different vitolas as they apply to the unique description of a cigar's shape. Therefore, two cigars of the same vitola would have similar measurements and form.

By definition, you are correct. I guess I don't know what other term you would use to separate different sticks, and characteristics within a line. Other than to say "different cigar" versus vitola.

Stand corrected
