Anybody in or around this area? We will be there for a week in April and could use some advise on B&Ms, places to smoke and also open to a herf if possible.

Rick: It's not a great cigar town. I spent 10 years there and still have family there.

There's a decent shpo in Towne Center in Mt. Pleasant. There's one cigar bar downtown that has their shpo on one level and the bar on the other. I believe that is the only place you can drink and smoke now in the whole city.

I can tell you a 100 great places to eat and some nice places to visit though.

We will be staying near downtown but don't mind a drive. I'll pack a generous supply for myself but always try to visit the local B&Ms also.

Yep, he's right, and I wouldn't even bother going to the one downtown, not worth bothering, I checked. And the hand rolled down in the Market/Battery area are just so/so. NOthing that blew me away.

You should definitely go to Wadmalaw Island to the Irvin House Vineyards/Firefly Distillery. Time it right and you can see Angel Oak on the way back over to the only Tea PLantation in the US, and still be back in town before 4 pm.

Depending on when you'll be here I could possibly meet up, it takes me a little over an hour to get to Cola from home and I go down to Bobby's B&M from time to time (real nice place with a great atmosphere) let me know what you guys cone up with.

youngest daughter lives there now in West Ashley, so I've been 3 times over the last couple years, and roamed all over the area.

DO NOT miss going to see the HUnley, it is very cool, and now they have it sitting upright, the water is clear, and they have items from the crew, especially the captain/Lt. Dixon, they have the gold $20 coin that saved him at Shiloh (an engraved gift from a lady in New Orleans) now bent from a Union shot that drove the coin into his leg, having to be removed at a field hospital, leaving him with a limp, also found with him was some exquisite European made diamond/gold/platinum jewelry.

If you are a history buff, there is much to see and do, but the Hunley would be tops, and then since you prefer drier wines, I would suggest the Winery/Stilry (they are together) It is actually one of the only Muscadine that was similar to dry CA, and WA varietals. Not my preference, but you may actually be surprised, you get to watch a video, and a tasting for around 7 or 10 bucks.

Then you can walk next door(40 ft) and for around 10-12 bucks try 5-6 different flavored vodka's, pretty good.

Places:

Boone Hall (Mt. Pleasant)

Magnolia Gardens (West Ashley)

The Yorktown (Patriot's Point in Mt. Pleasant)

The Market (downtown)

The Battery (downtown)

Restaurants:

Hundreds of great ones:

My favorites are:

Steakhouse-TBonz and Kaminsky's in the market downtown-Kaminsky's is great dessert bar and is part of Tbonz

Wings-Wild Wing Cafe-Best wings I've ever had hands down. 3 locations: Market downtown, Mt. Pleasant, and N. Charleston

Seafood-Carolina's.. This is my favorite restaurant in Charleston. The Shrimp and Crabmeat wantons wins the best of Charleston every year

Subs-Jerry's King Kong Subs...Best subs I've ever had outside of NY/NJ delis. Unbelievable (several locations)

More Seafood-The Boathouse.. a little pricy but fantastic food and the best raw bar in Charleston

Seafood-In old town Mt. Pleasant there's an area called Shem Creek. It's right on the water and there are several restaurants there and they are all good. Across the street at Shem Creek Bar and Grill is very good.

I'll send some more later.

Also please avoid Hyman's Seafood Restaurant. You will see lines all the way down the block to get in there and it's popular for out of towners but you'll never see a local eat there. I've been told that the owners go to the fish market every day and buy the cheapest stuff that's about to go bad and serve it.

Also if you're a baseball or hockey fan, Charleston has great minor league teams for both. Bill Murray owns the Charleston Riverdogs which is a Yankees farm team with a great stadium. The Stingrays are their hockey team and they play in the North Charleston Coliseum and they were always good when I lived there.

Middleton Place as well, similar to Magnolia Gardens,

At Magnolia Gardens, plan most of the day as well, you can eat at the Restaurant on site, neat lunchtime meal, take the Swamp/Boat tour, close to critters, large gator, etc. But more interesting, they still have the old sluice gates from the rice growing era, pre civil war, the guide explains how they used the tides to draw in fresh water, and how the NOrth African slaves were the ones who had the knowledge to do the rice growing.

Shem creek is where you go for some good seafood. (Reds) If downtown Charlestown, High Cotton. We frequent here every other time we go to isles of palms.

Hey dude, if we can do a her in Columbia the first round of cigars is on me! Unfortunately, I think the consensus is that Charleston isn't the place to her though...sorry! The mayor/city council has declared war on smokers of all kinds.

This is all great info since the wife and I will be there in May. Been talking to Bobby about some places and getting together for a smoke. Hopefully can get together with him and whoever else can make it.

I was born and raised in Charleston, still live here in the West Ashley area, and work downtown on the penisula. Charleston implemented an indoor smoking ban a few years ago, so there's not very many smoking friendly places.

My boss and I host a monthly herf on the back of his boat at the city marina, which is where I do most of my smoking downtown. The only other place that I smoke downtown is on the back patio of Midtown Bar & Grill or on their rooftop on upper King Street. Go there at night (any night) after 10pm and you will see the prettiest women in town.

The rooftop bar at the Market Pavilion Hotel at the corner of Market and East Bay is also a fun bar to hang out at with a great view of the city and the Harbor. There's also another rooftop bar off of East Bay St called the Vendue Inn that is pretty cool.

My favorite places to eat for dinner are Halls Chophouse on King Street, High Cotton on East Bay Street, and Hank's Seafood on Hayne Street near Market Street. Favorite places for lunch are Magnolia's, Slightly North of Broad, and Basil.

Hope that you have a great time when you're in town here visiting. take care!

Yea. Me Neither, but I plan on smoking a couple this weekend. Going to pick up some Glenlivet Nadurra and have a relaxing weekend getting the yard ready. Probably hit up the Maduro room on my way back from John Deere.
