I have a box of cigars I got probably 7 years ago. Not only did I never open the box (not that that really matters) but the box itself is shrink wrapped. I still have not opened it. This package has been kept in a closet at my parents house and my house (not in anything particularly humidity controlled). They probably ruined?

FWIW - They are Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Early Years Red Velvet (doubt they cost much if I got a box of them).

you might be able to rehumidify them at an incredibly slow rate... but unless your parents have been running a swamp cooler in their house 24/7 for the last 7 years, probably just refer to what dubleuhb said...

Dry boxing for 7 years is probably ill-advised. Though I'm not sure what the cutoff is when dry boxing turns into neglect. 🤔

I think he drove past "neglect" and entered full on "IDGAF" territory!

I actually have a sampler box that has been sitting out for about 3 years now. I bought them along with some other smokes (that I did put in the humi) a while back to help a brotha out who was going through a rough spell. If/when my boys ever decide to sneak any of my cigars to try, I'm hoping they go for these first. Then I can tell them that's the way all cigars taste.

Definitely this. I went into IDGAF mode long ago. Already threw out probably 40 cigs that were in old, molded humidified humidors. Starting out fresh with a new humidor. Got some heartfelt on the way, just found this old box of cigars in the closet. Guess I'll open em up, see how dry they are, and toss the cigars (and keep the box).

I'd try to bring em back. What you got to lose?

I'd say, if ti's worth it to you, bring them back. A buddy of mine returned from his European honeymoon with a bunch of Monte #4s, threw them into his self-defrosting freezer for a few years and forgot about them. Thinking they were a complete loss, he tossed them my way; after a slow return to optimum humidity, and a fair deal of patience, they returned to life. It was definitely worth it.

It is def worth a shot to see if you can bring them back to smoking condition...but I would have to say that all the oils are long gone as well and what was once a really good cigar is going to be bland at best

Where those cigars any good to begin with? I can't imagine I paid more than $40 for the box 7 years ago. I mean - maybe if they are rare now? I'd feel better giving them to someone who COULD bring them back. I'm still seasoning my 100 cigar humidor, and that's all I'll have to bring them back with.

What's the average ambient relative humidity in your town in South Carolina? Looks like it rarely falls below 50% in Charleston and Spartanburg, and I'm guessing you and your parents don't run a dehumidifier. If so, the cigars are prolly salvageable, if not OK.

I'll be willing to make room in my cabinet for them if you want to send them to me...I'll smoke a few after awhile to make sure they're ok and send the rest back.

Like others have said you can try to rehumidify them and restore them to smoking condition. It's really up to you and how much you value that box. For me since its a relatively cheap box and I already have hundreds of cigars it wouldn't be worth the toil for me.

Hell, I remember smoking a few of those way back in 2003 and they were not even smokable then. Mybe they have improved with neglect.:-k
