So here's the rundown!
I have 3 coolers fully loaded with full boxes of cigars. Aging is difficult in a cooler plus having 3 is just a pain in the azz.
I want a cabinet. I'm not rich so I can't afford to buy a 1000 ct cabinet not have I seen one I really like.
I don't need trays, I just need a shell or box big enough to hold 50 boxes give or take.
For those who have built a cabinet on a budget, I need some guidance.
I'd love one that's maybe 3 feet across, two feet deep, and maybe 4 foot tall.
Any suggestions?
Iv looked at used furniture stores etc. Target sells a curio for $150 that I like but how hard is it to line with cedar and make air tight? This thing is kinda cheap with two glass doors that's not even close to air tight.
I'm open to any and all suggestions.
Thanks

My suggestion would be browse local craigslist humidors.

I know folks have made them and can give you production advice, I'm not one of them. I got a steal on Craigslist, so watching it for a bit is my suggestion.

I didn't look at a map, but you're somewhere down South, right?

Consider checking with a local cabinetmaker.

I think Craigslist is your best bet. I wouldn't start out with a piece of furniture from Target or stores alike. Those pieces are usually snap together and I can't imagine the difficulty in getting it airtight. Plus the durability probably won't be great either.

Like suggested above probably Craigslist is your best value for a decent piece to start with and then go from there.

Once you get what you want to start out with I used Rockwell for my Spanish cedar. Had best prices and I think I found a coupon code online to.

I think your best bet is going to be to browse Craigslist and local goodwill stores to find something appropriate for you to modify correctly.

It's going to take a certain amount of money to modify and do what you need to do.

With a limited budget, that will eat up much of your budget - so you need to focus on getting base price _way_ down.

There are a wide variety of things that can be adapted.

Dunno what will suit you best, but you will know it when you see it.

Find a nice Gun cabinet (for in the 350 - 500 capacity) or a China Cabinet (1,000+) on Craigslist and line it with SC. I have a pretty good reasonable resource for SC.

while browsing craigslist for cabinets to convert, check out used humidors. There may be some very nice cabinet humidors that are furniture quality available for a big discount off the new price.

The downside of buying a ready made good quality cabinet humidor is that you'll miss all the enjoyment from building your own: time spent hunting and gathering supplies and tools, clearing out work space, fragrant fumes from glue and stains that will cause your wife to roll her eyes and wonder if they are harmful to your kid, keeping the dust out of the rest of the house...but you'll have the satisfaction when it's finished, that you did it yourself.

I've got an Avallo 2000 series Humidor that is really nice but I still have three large coolers (I had/have a problem).[gonzo]

If I had it to do over again I wouldn't buy the Avallo Humidor. Not because it isn't nice (it is great) but because the cigars age just fine in coolers with beads and I could've used the money to buy more cigars or something else.

Picking up a used Cabinet Humidor would be the best thing to to if you can find one.
Second would be converting a "furniture" cabinet or something like that.

I can send you pics of the full Avallo if you would like to see it. I still have to play "cigar box Tetris" in the Avallo. Just let me know. 🌫

See if you can find an old chest freezer.

Line it with luan plywood ($12 a sheet at Home Depot...the poor man's Spanish cedar)

Measure and cut the panels and let the pieces outgas for a day or two.
Pre-drill your holes and fasten with self-tapping round head pan screws.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day!

YES! Of course . . . use the Mahogany Luan !

After all, most of us know Spanish Cedar is in Meliaceae, or the Mahogany family.

What we commonly know as Cedar is in the Pinaceae family.

No, I'm not an Arborist, but I DID sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Thank you and good day.
