All too frequent power outages cause my wineadors’ temperatures to reset to the low 50's. I grabbed an unused APC Back-UPS 450 from the office, replaced the battery and hooked it up to both my 70w wineadors (Newair 28's) and a small fan I have in the area that sucks away any heat output from the units.

After the first outage using the UPS, I found both wineadors powered off and the UPS just constant toning. I pressed the UPS button twice and everything came back on. Wineadors were in the low 70's humidity and temperature wise. Not the usual 65/65. This has happened twice so far...guessing that the power was off for too long for the UPS, although an analog clock indicated the power was off for less than a few minutes.

If I don't use the UPS, the units do come back on after outages, their temperatures just get reset to the low 50's and humidity drops to upper 50's. They only stay that way for less than 6 hours, until I reset the temps.

Is this UPS behavior normal? Maybe an ETC…or just go without the UPS?

Have you tried a test run?

Fully charged UPS, pull the power cord, see how long the wineadors run.

Either way, <6 hours at 50/50 or 75/75 isn't going to hurt anything.

How about six DAYS?

Make sure the battery is good.

Make sure it has enough capacity to run both wineadors for a few minutes. You'd be surprised how quickly they can burn through it. Most consumer UPS's are just meant to keep a computer running through a blimp or long enough to shut it down once the power goes off. A couple of wineadors might have an even bigger drain.

Make sure the plugs are in plugs backed up by the UPS. Most UPS's have different plugs for devices that can go off (printers, speakers, etc) and those that should stay on (computer, monitor).

Don't forget you can test how long the battery can last by unplugging the UPS. If they go off right away, something is wrong.

What do they suffer through packed into a container to get here? Or in shipping? Probably that or more and they survive.

OP only asked about 6 hours anyway

Don't forget, we deal with _relative_ humidity - not moisture content.

So, the number for RH will change with the temperature while moisture content remains the same.

Basically, you are having a temperature shift due to the reset. Moisture content on a wineador full isn't going to shift very much at all if everything else remains the same.

FWIW, My thermostat on my wineador is acting flaky, and I think it may be going.

Looking around in anticipation of that event, I found

http://www.pexsupply.com/Ranco-ETC-111000-000-Single-Stage-ETC-Temperature-Control-w-Sensor-120-240V-Input-Includes-8-Cord

I'm thinking that if the TSAT goes, but I can straight wire or leave TSTAT in a constant on situation - when it resets, if it will reset to 50 degrees, tsat will call for on - Ranco will cycle on/off to temp.

I don't have a lot of power outages, but I have some - and the reset problem is an issue at that time.

What I am trying to say, is that your real problem is not so much powering off, but that it resets too low.

If I am interpreting the situation correctly.

YMMV

Thanks to all for the quick responses. I've written and rewritten my email to the power company expressing my distain of their services - have yet to send.
I agree, some UPS tests while I’m home are in order. Just get peeved when the power goes out, the UPS was of no help and the coolers are off.
The cigars will survive – they aren’t unattended for too long.
An ETC would address this, right?

Only if the ETC keeps it's programmed set points when the power is cut. Some don't.

Sending the power company a letter will probably only serve to make you feel better. I doubt they can/will do anything.

Shoot, I felt better just writing the letter - didn't need to send it. Yea, they are under the control of the weather around here lately...Need to look into ETC's some more.

Well...actually...they did quite the hack job on our batcave-like entryway. They opened it up quite a bit and could have cleand up better. Maybe we have the same company?

Do you happen to know a mall cop by the name of Brochin?

Don't know any mall cops...I try to avoid the malls, unless they have a cigar shop.

Grabbed another unused UPS from the office. IT guy said the unit should come back on; maybe that's why it was unused. I'll switch out batteries and give this one a try, testing it.

Should just move north to a cooler, less lightning prone area...

...yes, the resetting of the temps is the real issue. Prob nbd, it just happens more often during this time of year. Still will let the power company respond to my email rant.

Tested the second UPS today. With 2 wineadors plugged in, I unplugged the UPS and everything stayed on for 15 min 'til I plugged it back in. The wineadors didn't reset temps. Guess the first UPS I used wasn't being used at the office for a reason...Tired of this heat/humidity.
