I am getting highly discouraged with the cold approaching. My normal smoke time is anywhere from 10pm-1am and sometimes, depending on the size of cigar, can even get into 2am.

Anyways, I smoke on the deck in the backyard and in the Bay Area it's already getting down to the 50s at night. For those of you living in much cooler climates, how do you cope? Wear a lot of warm stuff? Not smoke? Maybe I should start investing in some good short robustos and corona/PCs.

When it rains I will start smoking on the porch which is fortunately fairly large and covered. Anyone use an outdoor heater?

I honestly would love to move to Texas...I could just buy a house and build a man cave inside for less money than what I pay for my 3 bed 1 bath here. I had an office but my wife insisted on each of our kids having their own rooms.

Z, where the F do you live that it gets so cold? Unfortunately, I have no chest hair so that won't work out so well.

It's 36 f here right now and it does get pretty cold in the winter here. I cut way back on winter smoking here and try to have a supply of robustos, coronas and little cigars for those times when you just gotta have a smoke and a pipe won't do.

It's 84f here in N.O. at 4:55 am. I'm so jealous.

Alas, smoking season is near.

Those outdoor heaters are pretty useless if the wind is blowing. Also the heat source on the "high hat" type is so high, that you have to stand just to get a little warmth.

I live in a dumpy neighborhood, so I was more concerned with price then looks, but this is what I did. I built a small room under my patio cover using 2 x 3s and walled it in with R4 rigid foam insulation as a wind block. Cost less then $100. I put a fan up high on one side for ventilation, plus left a small opening up high on the other side for fresh air. I then took a "high hat" 80k BTU heater, and cut it down, so that the heat source was just above head level when sitting. I still have to bundle up a bit, but I can comfortably watch hockey games at night when it's in the 20s.

The whole thing was suppose to be disassembled in the spring, but a couple summers ago, I added a cheap 5k BTU a/c unit for those 90+ degree, 100% humidity days.

If I do this at the new house in NC, it will be done with 2 x 6 framing, R-19 fiberglass insulation, R-4 on the outside in place of sheathing, sheetrock interior, and vinyl exterior siding to match the house. That kind of room would hold heat a whole lot better, but at the time I built the one here in Jersey, I was just looking for a quick, cheap way to block the wind.

Central PA and it's 43 degrees now. I smoke in the garage but I usually can only smoek one a day if that during the winter. The dog days of winter are soon to be here.

Love it here in South Carolina this time of year. June-August it's just way too damn hot to smoke.

How does that compare cost wise to just buying a tough shed or some other prefab, then insulating it, adding sheetrock and electrical for heat/ac?

A heck of a lot cheaper to build your own from scratch. Of course that's only if you have the proper tools, and know what you're doing.

Western NC Brushy Mountains here not far from DP's NC place. I much prefer smoking in winter than the heat of summer. I pull on Carhartt overalls and a hooded jacket or parka as well as fingerless gloves. For the more serious cold I wear Carhartt Arctic Coveralls with the heavy hooded parka. Dressed like this I've enjoyed a smoke in temperatures that slushed my beer. Never particularly cared for hooded coats much until one really cold evening when I pulled one up... and son of a gun, they really increase warmth substantially. Who knew?{;-)

My favorite thing when it gets cold here, is take a tray with various beverages and a cigar to the hot tub.

You can be sitting in 102 degree water and comfy when it is 20 degrees and sleeting outside.

Hot tub is outside, but has shielding on the sides up to standing head level and a retractable awning.

heh, heh. Friend of mine called one time, and asked how I was doing in the freezing rain and sleet.

Told her sitting in the hot but smoking a cigar and drinking Scotch.

She couldn't believe it, initially. Hell, winter is best time for a hot tub.

I then said to her, other than my scotch glass freezing to the hand rail was going great. Spilled some scotch when I popped it loose.

You get cold, get deeper in the water. You get heated up, slide more body out of the water.

Other than that, usually go smoke with my son in his garage.

Not even room to sit in my garage. However, more than once I have gotten up in the boat and smoked a cigar. Only visually different than being at the lake. Plus, you can't pee over the side.

We are approaching our nice cigar weather here in Key West. During the summer it gets a little sticky outside. Can't wait for Oct. Oct to Mar are ideal!!!

Yeah I know, sucks to be me. [sarcasm]
