What cigars pair well with bold red wine? Am doing well with Scotch, Bourbon, and coffee matches. Have done multiple searches with no real results for red wine. My pairings have been not so good. Hoping a red wine drinker has real world input.

I dunno about others around here... But I'm a daily red wine drinker. I have had zero luck pairing cigars with wine other than PORT. In fact, I try to enjoy my cigar before the wine. I cannot taste the cigars after red wine. If I do have a cigar after red wine ill use a tongue scraper and brush my teeth with baking soda first. And then only a full bodied spicy cigar will do for me. Otherwise It's just a waste of a cigar and very frustrating for me because I can't taste the cigar...

Port on the other hand has paired with most cigars for me. Especially maduro. Kinda like the whole port n chocolate thing... I also really like corojo with port. I'm just starting to enjoy port. Never used to like it. Since I started pairing with cigars I'm a fan...

I am no longer the wino that I once was, although I still have tendencies.

It may seem counter intuitive, but what I have been enjoying with my cigars - is mostly merlot, or something around 12.5% to 13% alcohol, a good indicator of how dry it is.

I enjoy the cigar more, and the wine doesn't seem to get in the way of the cigar.

I'm talking something simple that would be an everyday table wine, not something nice enough to give as a gift.

Simple, uncomplicated and okay, but not really bold.

To me, this is better than the 3 or 4 ports that I have tried.

This month, anyhow.

Will probably be different next month🇨🇮

ETA-I daily drink wine, unless I have been knocking a few bottles out while smoking cigars in recent days - then I'll take a day or two off.

I've never found one and I've stopped trying. White wine, on the other hand.... A dry Chardonnay for example.

Have paired many a cigar with many bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Ports on special occasions. Cromagnon with Layer Cake, Tat Miami with Dreaming Tree
But the lighter the red (Malbec, Merlot, Chianti), the more medium or lighter the cigar should be IMHO.
I don't drink blushes or white wine, and leave those for the females.

If you are near a Costco or Total Wine see if they have Petite Petit. It's full bodied and smokey and seems to work well for me with bolder cigars.

You might also want to try a simple Pinot since they go well with most anything.

Fausto and gnarly head old vine zin is a cheap, good mix.

Tat TAA 11/12 and mercury head for when your feeling like a baller.

Agree with Cacman - port or a Cab Sauv with a medium full to full bodied smoke, spicey is better! A nice buttery Chardonnay might pair well with a medium or milder too (DE Java, or a Macanudo)

DED - will look for the Petite Petit and give it a try.

Not a fan of Pinot's but can understand how the complexity would pair well with a CC.

I normally try to pair a maduro that has a similar or complimentary profile to the Cab/Port (dark cherry goes well with chocolate). But I normally smoke a heavier cigar so lighter vinos are lost in the smoke on my palate.

Bordeaux's have been mentioned too, and have sparked my interest again to try. Don't believe I've ever had. Would sure like to try Pete's personal wine.

Merlot or Beaujolais

Believe the Beaujolais (or burgundy) is lighter-bodied compared to a Merlot. Always liked Bolla as a basic Italian table red - Merlot is good with dinner, and the Valpolicella is good for for those that prefer something a little lighter.

You are quite correct! Beaujolais also drinks beautifully at a young age.

This thread is making me want to restock on wines, and try some different pairings.

My wife had quit drinking wine or about anything for a number of years, her system seemed to be having trouble with alcohol. Recently, she has however gradually been having more and more with no problems.

I have gradually consumed, or gifted away almost all of the wine on hand over the years.

In recent years, I had mostly been buying grocery store type wines so that she wouldn't be disappointed if I had something nice.

It would be great to start building back up some nice stocks again.

Try a Tawny Port but avoid maduros when you do.

Open a bottle . . . anything . . . take a sip or two. The wine should tell you which cigar in your humi it would pair well with.
A mild cigar is always a good start. The trick here is to not mix competing flavors but complimentary ones.

I like all kinds of wine but when it comes to pairing red wine and cigars I usually stick with the more fruit forward full bodied reds, Shiraz/Syrah, Merlot, Chianti and some Zins work well. I tend to avoid Cabs and Bordeaux that exhibit a lot of tannin with cigars pairing... I save those for food pairing.

Port wine, a whole other story.
