I know you must be asking about "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and as much as I love Jimi, SRV's version is the one I prefer.

but in the context of the period, 1969............Hendrix was..............................well he was Hendrix
the equipment and recording technology wasn't the greatest then.................still...........he laid the foundation

I saw SRV in 1981 in a tiny Bar, no stage he set up on a 15X15 dance floor in Lubbock in 1981....

His first tune was Voodoo Chile,,,

BOth, based on my mood, the original will always be the CLASSIC, he created the style for the song to be raw, like the late 60's early 70's hard rock.


SRV's version was well practiced for years, then incorporated the blues for a bit of perfection, well done, and excellent in it's own right.

Hendy first for me. He was the pioneer and his version is still amazing and fresh. As brilliant as Stevie was, he was following.

Wheel…watch the below YouTube…see the way he takes it when he's told he's one of the greatest to play the guitar…he was really humbled.


As much as I love both…SRV was just following Hendrix…almost note for note on that song. He modeled Hendrix all the way down to the compisition of his own band! I'm glad he breathed life into the song but they're 2 great guitarists that have different styles. One was an innovator that was cut down before his prime, one was a sheer talent that let drugs rob him of his creativity only to bounce back sober for a short time. Hendrix was bored with Rock and was experimenting with Classical and Jazz stylings. I really LOVED the PBS special on Hendrix. It was nice to see those soooo close to him say what a charming and happy person he was.

Original. The question never occurred to me.

However, I have spent hours debating (in my head) which artist's Little Wing I prefer. For years I gave a slight edge to SRV. Now I consider it a draw.

Each version is as different as each artist that performed the song.
Jimi's was first and sets the high standard. No one can play like Jimi did.
SVR's is a great cover in honor of Jimi's version.
Buddy Guy also does a great VooDoo Chile.

Holy crap......been utubing Jimi this morning after thinking about this post. Came across one I've not heard before, but after repeated listenings...maybe 5 already, this tune is absolutely incredible. Just might be my favorite Hendrix song....at least for the moment. Wow.

Been listening to that one and a few others since the 70's when I was a teen. Those were the cheap cassettes, hehe.
