thinking of getting this for my tv in my garage, any users here use this product? if so how do you like it? also how much do the premium subscriptions cost mainly for the sport channels?

Roku is a great little device- I use an AppleTV instead for various reasons, but I would think the Roku would fit most people's needs better.

Just FYI, a lot of the premium channels require a cable subscription to access (like ESPN, HBO, Disney). They don't generally offer you the ability to watch those channels by paying straight from the Roku. Do you already have cable? Which sports do you watch (or at least, what channels do they come on)? That will make it easier to determine if you'll get what you want from it.

I have a first gen. ROKU and it is a pretty nice product for the money. I believe that the sports packages are about the same as they are through DTV or your Cable Co. At least they were when I got the 1st gen. ROKU. I forget when I got it. I don't even see my version on their website. It is a box w/HDMI or S-Vid outputs. Wifi connection or CAT5 (which works better). I like and still use it today. I believe I got it in or around 2008. Sorry I can't be more help. Hopefully someone with more recent experience will chime in.

I bought one refurbished and so far it's OK. Can't comment on sports channels, I don't watch them.

No other streamer offers a s much free content(1200)channels now and they work great and the 3 has the earphone and you can use it as a radio when the tv is off and the wife is sleeping by acessing Tune In Radio 9Free)..

Don;t believe the naysayers this is the Future of tv..

Love my roku.....gave up cable/satellite years ago. Netflix is like 8 bucks a month and Amazon is 75 a year. I don't know about Hulu because I don't care about watching tv when it's new.

You probably won't be able to get watchespn with direct TV which cuts out most of the sports stuff.

Question:

How much bandwidth does this thing use?

I bought one for my parents last Christmas. This Christmas, they are thinking of actually hooking it up (facepalm.) I contacted their internet provider...wow - that was painful. I got some RUDE (and I mean VERY rude) guy in a call center somewhere in Mumbai that I could hardly understand Thanks to kids with speech delays, I'm getting pretty good at deciphering, though.

After a very long and VERY painful conversation that is chronicled elsewhere, I finally PRIED out of him that, depending on the plan, data caps are between 150-300 GB and up to 70Mbs on the lowest plan. (hahaha - ran a speed test on the folks' internet - best speed I got on a Saturday was 11.3.)

How many hours of streaming does that give them before they reach their cap? (I think they would be around 250 if I understand their plan correctly.) My dad watches hours and hours of Antiques Roadshow and Pawn Stars, and my mom is an NCIS marathon and Judge Judy addict.

Data caps? Really?

Cable One. They say unlimited, but when you pin them down, they cop to caps.

Didn't know caps still existed. Speed yes. Data no.

That wouldn't fly with me.

They have speed caps, too. Gotta pin them to the freakin' WALL to find out about the data caps...or go over it and find out about it the hard way, like my parents did one month when my dad fell asleep streaming some TV series on netflix (and it went allllllllllllll night long, and into the next day because he just turned off the TV and not the blu-ray that he was streaming it THROUGH...)

Tammy, max is about 1gb/hr. A lot of programming clocks in at less than that. Down to about 300-400mb/hr at the low end.

Tw, yeah, data caps are coming back. Too many people running servers and excessive downloads. Generally speaking, not that the isps can't handle it, a few might no be able to, but that it's a way to keep it in check and make a few extra bucks.
