If Papa Murphy made a gun, it would be the best.

My personal favorite defense gun has always been a Beretta Jetfire in 22 short. I have carried it for many years including while hiking.I never leave without it in my pocket.

Of course the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System". This it means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a friend, companion, or family because if something happens there is someone to go get help.

I remember one time while hiking with my girlfriend in northern Alberta out of nowhere came this huge brown bear charging us and was she mad. We must have been near one of her cubs. Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire I would not be here today.

Just one shot to my girlfriend’s knee cap and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace. That's one of the best pistols in my collection...

(my favorite story when people say .22's won't do the job)

Need more info.

For you?

For someone else?

Going spend adequate time to practice & train?

How often, and where, and in what situations will the cc take place?

Just to name a few variables....

The .38 S&W Airweight series comes to mind...........some recoil issues some people say.......didn't bother me any, but I'm stronger than the average person.

Most take +P loads as well.

Ruger makes a nice .357 snubbie if ya wants some beef.

Can't comment on pistols.

Yeah for me, I open carry and have concealed my H&K USP full size. 40 for years.

Thinking about getting a compact. Yes I can practice as long as ammo is readily available.... so really open to caliber but ideally would be between. 22 and 9mm

Taurus makes some interesting cc snubbies, including the typical 9 shot .22, but also a few .380 and 9mm varieties.

Some people bag on Taurus......seems to me they make pretty decent stuff from what I have seen over the years.......(but that's only 5 or 6 different guns).

.22 ammo availability can be an issue in some places

Find a recently retired cop, and buy his Drop Piece.

They'd probably sell it cheap.

M & P Shield..... Good value ,,,decent price.... POLY gun....... If your looking for more on classic metal line,,, Sig 938 or 380,,, COLT 380... High end Kimber Solo.... Thing is NOBODY can tell you whats right for you.... Do a lil research,,couple magazines,,websites,,, try a couple of gun shows,,handle what interests you... And most of all if you have a range nearby that rents handguns to try before purchase spend some time and $$$ ,,listen to some XXXperts opinions,,but dont take it as gospel .... Then decide for yourself..... Features,,safeties,,,single,or double action,,trigger pull pressure etc.... Semi auto???? Revolver??? Caliber???? Good luck!!!! Hope I didnt confuz you more??? Im recently new to same and went through same... Remember the smaller and shorter the gun,,its only good at short range,, some good compromises for you... If its going to be an everyday carry also consider weight, capacity, comfort, and holster.... ??? I know I forgot a few more important items.... GOOD LUCK!!!!!

There are only two valid reasons I can come up with for carrying a firearm, be it open or concealed.

1) To protect myself,

2) To protect others.

That being said, what would be important criteria that such a weapon should meet.

1) Ammunition must have a much better than average chance of putting an assailant down with one well placed shot. That being said, I'd stay away from a .22. Not that a .22 bullet won't kill, as I'm aware of more than a few people who are with us in spirit only due to being on the receiving end of a 40 grain .22 bullet. But, most of the time, a single .22 wound is usually a nuisance. If not near perfectly placed, a .22 will do little to significantly slow down someone hell bent on pounding a mud-hole in one's arse. As a minimum, I'd opt for .38+P.

2) The weapon must be reliable. I don't want a cheaply made ill fitted stamped piece of junk if my life or the life of a loved one may depend on it one day. I'm baffled why someone consider buying a $200 piece of chit instead of well made reliable $500 handgun when their wife or child's life may one day depend on that gun properly firing.

3) It must be a firearm that I am proficient with. In order to be proficient, it must fit my in hands comfortably. What fits my hands may not fit yours. In addition, different guns within the same caliber handle recoil differently. In fact different generations of the same model do so as well such as the 3rd and 4th generation Glocks. Second only to trigger control in terms of accuracy would be relative sensitivity to recoil. Recoil affects everyone differently and has a significant effect on 2nd and subsequent shot placement.

YMMV

I deferred military service but I have grown up with guns and hunting. I was a firearms instructor with the NRA and shot competitively. I am a good instinctive handgun shooter against beer cans and paper, at the most 20 feet.

I have no qualms defending myself, I'm pretty sure in my case my antagonist would be within 3-5 feet of me, it would be point at the mass and pull until they go down. I would never entertain a shoot out at distance, even if I carried a longer barrel, not being police or military trained, my being able to control myself to get off aimed shots under those circumstances would be difficult.....I know my limits.

Short of trying to stop a "Sandy Hook" event my family would not take kindly to me getting involved in anything that could take my life unless I/we were personally at risk.

All that being said I agree with everything you have pointed out, know your your gun, have the right ammo and gauge your circumstances.
