Our new puppy will be ready to come home in a few weeks. I have been researching "Homemade Dog Food". Our last dog suffered from allergies on a regular basis.

I believe it was from diet of commercial food , and a particular vaccination.

So, does anyone here make Homemade food for their dog?

Besides the cats that cross the fence?? : )

My wife does the homemade biscuit thing…PB, cheese, etc. I have wanted to try a homemade diet but haven’t ventured there yet. We have been feeding ours “taste of the wild” brand…OK, probably not great.

We use to have food delivered weekly on dry ice which was 100% meats, but as much as I love ‘em, it got to be too much.

Try dr. Harvey's. The guy has his own factory right down the road from my house. He makes a good product. You have to add meat to it, so it's semi home made.

The GF makes all her dog's food. Partially due to allergies (wheat) also simply because she likes it.

Organic meat from trader joes, brown rice, kale, peas, carrots, whatever potatoes she gets from the farmers market... blueberries...

She also makes sweet potato and chicken treats for it... all organic. Damn dog eats healthier than I do.

Treats made from the left over malts & barley are popular at the local breweries. Could pick some up if you want to try.

I make biscuits using spent grain flour peanut butter and eggs.

Are husky is very sensitive we couldn't find food that he could digest well. We ended up finding caster and pollex organix. He loves it in his stomach can handle it. I think right now he has the duck and sweet potato kind.

I have been feeding a homemade raw diet for 16+ yrs. I have been breeding, training and importing working GSDs for over 20yrs... I can tell u stories all day about commercial food and allergies and cancer etc. I raise all my litters on raw. Most people serious about competing with healthy working dogs do raw nowadays. If ur interested, Pm me and I'll tell u all about it. It's easy and cheap. Ur dog will not have allergies and it's coat will shine like u have never seen. Be forewarned most vets still don't like it. But that's a story in itself!

It drives me crazy how these pet food companies have people convinced that u need to feed those dried up, smelly, fat sprayed and salted pcs of crap to ur dog for him to be healthy! That dog nutrition is rocket science. That we should feed a variety of fresh proteins, fruits and veggies to our kids to grow heathy, but noooooo, give this kibble out of a bag for ur dog to be healthy because u r not smart enuf to understand ur dogs needs.... Nonsense..... Yes I'm about as passionate about this as cacman and kitty litter!!!

Bill,

Primal brand frozen or make your own like fishy1 suggested. It's not hard, seriously. It's something like 90% raw meat and 10% vegetables, throw it in a bowl, the dog will eat it.

They're pretty good. If you call them, dr. harvey actually answers customer questions himself. Unfortunately, my two dogs didn't take to his food, but they're picky. Our last two dogs loved it. They made it to 15 and 17 and a half years.

My grandmother used to keep a gallon milk jug beside the sink for table scraps.

She'd cut the top and 1/2 way down the side, leaving 1/2 open, and the handle to carry.

Any food item, barring things like banana peels, etc, she'd throw in the milk jug.

At the end of the day, it got kinda full. At night Grandaddy would fill it the rest of the way

with regular dry dog food and let that soak it good.

His bird dogs *loved* it. In the winter, they'd top it off with hot water . . .

The dogs went nuts every night for this . . .
