So, to re-ignite the kitty litter vs beads argument, we have the New Mexico Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, where the use of kitty litter resulted in a radioactive "burst" with temperatures reaching 1600F.

Do you want that to happen to your humidor?

Then you better never use kitty litter or your humidor will explode in a radioactive ball of fire and gas.

where'd this come from. I'm on third year of kitty litter in coolidor and has worked flawlessly. Now my coolidor is not sitting next to an incineration burner, but ............... all is well here.

KL was mixed with wheat, maybe the chaff or chaff/dust which is combustible under certain conditions helped the fire to burn. Not just KL by itself. More to this than just KL used for cigars. Mine's not dusty.

Point is more factual information needs to be released prior to making allegations on one specific possible element as cause.

the organic kitty litter has been under suspicion because it can release heat as it decomposes.

So much for the argument that "silica is silica".

Ummm. . . Guess shows what you know about chemistry.

Organic cat litter, would not be the silica kind(not all cat litter is the same chemical stuff as the beads. . . )

Silica dioxide is inorganic material, and therefore not "organic kitty litter".

And all organic material releases heat as it decomposes, its just a question of how much heat and what its dispersed against. . .

including using an organic wheat-based kitty litter instead of a clay-base inorganic kitty litter.

Since the article was being quoted, I figured I would too. . Not only did they not use Silica Gel, they used the wrong organic Kitty litter. . .

Maybe they should have been buying inorganic kitty litter all along, as it wouldn't suffer from the decomp reactions the organics do. . . (hey look another use for this stuff. Store your cigars and prevent nuclear melt downs. . . )

Really I quite enjoy the crusade against Kitty litter around here. There are beads designed specifically for humidors and make sense as the choice material. It doesn't mean that anyone who chooses to use Silica Gel from the pet store is an idiot, because of what is printed on the container. It means they have another viable solution, which you don't choose to use or promote. . .

Do we really have to resort to half-information and mis-informed propaganda to make a point?

I dunno...

seems pretty clear to me that if they'd just used heartfelt beads at the New Mexico Waste Isolation Pilot Plant they wouldn't have had this radioactive "burst".

I wonder if you any of them have seen the kitty litter threads. Someone should probably forward them some links.

I'm thinking about switching to litter... I'm getting sick of the cold water splashing up and hitting me...
