Not unlike the server overload that fluffy caused last year.
My guess is some random commonly used ajax call has a bug causing it to hang and in turn is chewing up the servers' max connections.
Freefalls maybe?

Dunno where he's been though, dont think he's banned.
But the timing of the most recent slow down seemed to be around the time the new slightly more data intense smilies were rolled out. I dont think the forums are allocated very much of the servers resources as evidenced by high traffic slowdowns and the great fluffy crash last year.
Just my uneducated guess.
Servers are struggling to run spell check on Charlies posts... gotta be it!
