About a month ago Firefox started acting up. It seems like everytime I open Firefox then click on Favorites, it creates a new instance of the following:

Bookmarks Toolbar folder

Favorites Bar folder

BookmarksBar folder

I also use internet Explorer. It pulls the favorites list from the same location. I haven't noticed it creating additional instances, but it will show the multiple copies.

At the moment there are about 20 instances of each in the favorites drop down. It's a nuisance to have to delete them every few days.

I posted a question on the Firefox support group, but haven't gotten a workable solution.

I tried to deinstall and reinstall Firefox, but that was useless. Apparently Firefox leaves a bunch of crap behind when it uninstalls.

My next step is to deinstall and see if I can find a list of "leave behind" crap to delete as well.

Any ideas?

Ditto with Chrome. Switched when Cbid started having issues with IE...no problems since.

No issues with bookmarks either.

I use firefox and my wife uses chrome. Right now I'm having problems with chrome building huge files and slowing everything down. When I've had trouble with firefox in the past I have deleted it and reloaded. I now try to hold off installing any updates for about a month. I use Piriform clleaner(free version) to get rid of excess garbage and registry problems and it keeps things running well.

Chrome is good, but Google has it f'ing nose in too much already.

Uninstall and then reinstall Firefox.

If you want to save favorites try a bookmark manager like Xmarks to sync all your bookmarks.

I'm with you, Anthony. Prefer Chrome at home, but at work have to use four different browsers/ handlers for different required programs, including both versions of Outlook. Tony, will try that cleaner.

Thanks for the ideas. But, I'd rather fix Firefox, than switch to something else.

Google Chrome isn't an option. I'm not a fan of Google's business practices, nor am I fan of the politics of it's owner. The only good thing I can say about Google Chrome is the plugin that allows you to see where Free Fall auctions bottom out.

I do use their search engine, but only as an anyomous user.

The few gmail accounts that I have were only used when I was banned from here and needed bogus accounts for abrignac001, 002, etc...

As far a a bookmarks manager, My book marks are already sync'd. IE and Firefox looks to the same folder to populate their lists. Any change I make on one automatically populates the other.

Not a big fan of free addon's either. It's been my experience that few free addon's are truly free. The cost is usually background ad scripts, or worse, that causes bog downs.

My bad, I assumed you completely removed all user data too, see, "Removing user profile data" here:

I also assume you have no add-ons, extra tool bars etc.

That was back during the free TW days. I hypothesized that a certain person who no longer posts here was perhaps under a certain cone of protection. IIRC, I actually had three different accounts banned back to back. I think I made it up to abrignac003 before this account was freed from bondage its 3 day bondage. Good thing as I was out of credit cards to register new accounts. Well, I could have used my wife's if needed.

Well didn't work. I uninstalled Firefox, deleted all the Firefox directories I could find and removed all the profile info. Reinstalled and its back doing the same old.

Sounds like you have a virus or the remnants of an errant program. Can you restore a backup point from the time before the problem showed it ugly head?

I found this about IE:

"Finally solved!!! It's the iCloud control panel! Anyone having this issue, uncheck Bookmarks in that control panel, then go into your Internet Explorer's Favorites Toolbar folder and delete all the copies - they won't come back. If the iCloud panel is on multiple computers you need to uncheck it on them as well."

I've found many solutions to problems in the past. The best way I've found to cure something is to keep looking without buying anything. Sooner or later the problem will be solved and something may be learned. Have you noticed any new programs that were added with Firefox updates- they have been a problem for me in the past.

If this is still going on uninstall and download CCleaner from Piriform, free version is fine. Use the registry cleaner to clear out all of the old Firefox files, you'll have to run the registry cleaner a few times.

I prefer Firefox myself over chrome.
