I've been a faithful user of Kingsford blue bag. Yesterday a friend told me about Stubb's briquettes, and the Lowe's in town carries them. Picked up two 15 lb bags on the way home yesterday. Same price as Kingsford, but 15 lbs instead of 20.

Well... better briquettes, IMO. More dense, burned hotter, lasted longer, and produced less ash. I think I may be using these more often.

What do you use and or recommend?

I burn natural hardwood charcoal from our local grill store.

No manufactured bricks of charcoal dust and limestone, just too much ash mess.

Royal oak lump. Never used briquettes. Best of the West was pretty good too, just don't see it too many places, and only found the 8lb ? Bags. Home Depot here carries the royal oak in 20lb bags for around $12 I think.

I've been using mostly Stubbs for a while now, 3-4 years I think. I switched back around when kingsford changed the shape of their briquettes, whenever that was. My smokers don't work well with lump, so I went through a bunch of different brands trying to find something that worked the way I wanted it to. Rancher was the best, longest burn times, lowest ash, but I can't find it anymore. Stubbs was the next best of the ones I tried. The hands down worst was Trader Joes briqs. I honestly think the wal-mart house brand ("sam's choice"?) performed better. I do still use lump in my grill and for that I use Lazzari. If you want some info on various brands of lump, check out www.nakedwiz.com, lot of good info / tests of various brands there.

Kingsford blue bag is cheap (two 16 lb. bags for around $14 at wally world) and it works well on the grill or smoker. I have seen one load burn for 16 hrs. in my large WSM.

The Walmart here usually has a good everyday price on Stubbs. Lowes usually has a deal for a little less (not much) on Memorial Day weekend. I bought a bunch of 15 pound bags for about $7.50 each with no tax and no delivery fee from Amazon last year. I prolly have 150 pounds or more of it in my basement. I use it or kings ford with no worries. I used to use various lump but find it less predictable and the quality varies widely. Stubbs is good stuff.

It's 13 something plus shipping now. It's a timing thing.

Yessiree. Comes in 2 20lb bags for the price of 1 pretty much. The first year we did it I think it was 5.99 or 6.99 for two bags. We bought 20 bags I think. Wes(Gonesledn) bought a whole pallet! The price has gone up over the years, but it's still a killer deal

Walmart offers a similar price, but 15lb bags

^ kings ford right? I used to get in on that too.

Another thing to watch for is end of summer clearance at CVS. Small bags 75-90% off depending on timing and availability. Those smaller bags are awesome for tailgating. I also got about 20 of the Coleman mini propane tanks that way for the performer. I'll never run out of either.

Hickory chunks mostly, with occasional mesquite, apple or cherrywood in the Cookshack electric smoker. Natural gas grill. When I do use the charcoal grill, it's Kingsford.
