Colt got too used to the government tit, quit innovating and didn't pay attention to customer wants or needs.
The John Moses Browning 1911 pistol is is a fantastic firearm, Colt just doesn't make the best 1911 these days. If you want Colt's name on your 1911, you will pay for the privilege. Yes, it's cool to have their name on the side, but IMOP, Kimber, Springfield Armory, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Remington and many other smaller makers build better 1911 pistols and a many of them cost less if not much less than a Colt. Even Rock Island armory puts out several good inexpensive 1911 clones.
Colt ARs rifles and carbines are not the best either, but they are priced above comparable and often superior AR rifles.
Colt wheel guns are some of the best, there are some Colt Pythons selling above $3,000, but Colt quit making them except for their custom shop.
Being located in one of the worst states for gun rights isn't helping them either.
