My wife's side of the family is planning to get everyone together over the Christmas break (for the kids).

Approximate dates between Dec 23rd and Jan 2nd.

Kids are teens, aged 14 to 19.

Mother in law wants Caribbean or pretty beach with warm weather and sand and cocktails.

Prices during this time frame are outrageous.

Looking for some good ideas that would make things a bit more affordable.

Flying from Boston.

I was thinking Gulf coast. Not caribbean, but warm. I don't know anything about it.

Or southern CA. MIL likes Disney and I'll take the train to Tijuana.

Mexico is my first choice (I love Playa del Carmen) but we'd be paying 4 times the normal prices.

Let's hear it. That hidden gem.

Christmas is a bad time to go south - way too popular and expensive. Most places are already booked and those that are not are not the best of places.

Can't beat the beaches in SoCal for proximity to lots of activities for all ages. Anywhere from San Diego north to Santa Barbara would put you within 2 hour drive or less to Disneyland. Some less pricey places in that stretch along the coast can be found in San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Seal Beach, Long Beach, Ventura. Mountains and snow at Big Bear or Arrowhead within 2-3 hour drive of all. Traffic is better at that time of year, due to school being out and lots of locals going out of town. Check to see if there are vacation rental houses in the area of your choice, an economical alternative to several hotel rooms for your group.

If you're not committed to Disneyland, then further north, up the central coast, are Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Monterey (one of my faves) and Carmel: all great places to visit with stuff (world class golf courses in Monterey and Carmel) to do. Big Sur south of there is very scenic, but not much sandy beach. Lots of 3-4 bedroom houses for rent in Monterey.

If you do come to SoCal, give me a holler and I can host your family and you for dinner with cocktails for the adults and cigars for those who smoke

If it was me, I'd do New Orleans.

Plenty of stuff for everyone to do. No sand though.

Seriously an awesome place!

As far as the Gulf....Orange Beach AL is a great spot and so is Destin FL. But I don't know that it would be warm enough for beach time.

I'd like to walk the path Sherman followed and burn food stores. Do they still have piggly wigglys?

Check with Tamapatom. He's got some rental properties on the gulf around Tampa.

Sounds like you need to ping Palama and consider a Hawaiian vacation.

If looking at the gulf coast I would recommend Destin, FL or Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL. Destin is somewhat more touristy and has more to do. Gulf Shores/Orange Beach will be less crowded and are only 30 minutes from Pensacola and 45 from Mobile.

The largest influx of "Snowbirds will not hit until after 1 Jan. Temps will range in the upper 50's to the low 70's. As far as being expensive, it is the beach. One should still be able to find a rental to include condo's to a beach house on the west beach or Ft Morgan peninsula road.

If you decide to head this way let me know and I will be glad to help with the local knowledge.

Good luck on the planning.

Aruba is warm. Has nice beach. Weather is almost guaranteed. Direct flights from Boston too!

San Diego's north county: Carlsbad, Encinitas, or Oceanside.

Close to D-Land. LEGOLAND. TJ. Beaches. Weather is usually outstanding in Dec and Jan. Not as pricey as Hell-A or Sandy Eggo.

I agree with Burner about panhandle and south Alabama aka Redneck Riviera. Nice but not hot at that time of year.

The Florida Keys are nice that time of year as well. We took the family to Hawks Cay on Duck Key a few years back and really enjoyed it there.

Disney will be crowded that time of year. Like packed sardines.

Southern Cal is great too. Santa Monica is a great place to visit and you can day trip from there to lots of sights. Plenty for all the family to do.

Thanks to all.

Good to know that the gulf coast won't be beach weather.

The Keys are a thought.

The Disney reference was for SoCa only. Not Orlando.

Sister in law is putting the trip together, so my input will need to be subtle. Not sure I'm capable of that. Screw that. I'll give them subtle!

I'd rather wait and do it right.
