Was thinking about getting one just to use around our place as we live in a rural setting and get alot of wildlife on our two acre patch. Will likely use to take some shots around our chicken coup just to see what might visit in the wee hours. Any suggestions from the brothers here on a decent yet inexpensive unit? I saw one in a Natchez ad by Browning for around $100....that had 10pxl cam w/ card n batteries included...good deal?

Paul,

In my experience, don't pay out much for them, unless you get a super high end unit.....I think one is called plot watcher.

I've owned many brands ranging in price. They are ALL temperamental. It can be very frustrating.

Batteries die early

No pictures

Only 5 pictures

Pictures of coons and crows.

But my deal is different. I check mine weekly as they are an hour away from home. Once you get them working correctly, they usually do fine.

Honestly, I would buy whatever is on sale. I can't tell much difference in any of them. However, I haven't tried the Browning.

$100 sounds like a solid price to me.

You will need an SD card also. Some have those included.

Here is a link to the one Natchez had for under $100 but had others for a bit more on sale too.

Thanks Mattie

Just out of curiosity I looked at a bass pro catalog.

Brownings are priced from $130-$170.

I picked one up from Cabelas to see what was playing in the chicken pen at night and figure out what time it was so I could wait for em.

Did the trick and I ended up taking out nearly 20 raccoons over the course of a year. Haven't had any problems since.

IIRC I picked up whatever infrared video/still setup was on sale at Cabelas for under $100.

Unless you want ultra premium don't spend over 100

These things go on sale all the time and there are a lot of rebates out there as well

Prices might be floating a touch high with hunting season around the corner

I usually end up with the primos brand for $30-$60 after rebate

Considering what your using it for and the fairly close proximity to the house, would a security camera work?

You may even get a deduction on your home-owners for installing security cameras?

You would think a standalone unit with battery would have option of solar.

I have had moultrie trail cams for years. The technology has gotten very good. I wouldn't pay more than $150 and make sure you do not get one with a flash (if they even make them anymore) it tends to scare the critters. I get over 100 pics a month just out in my woods. If I put food out even more. One set of pics I thought I had a zoo going. I had deer, coyotes, raccoons, possum, squirrels, my cat, the boys, hawks, and owls. My batteries lasted over six months and over 600 pics. Have fun!

I've bought a couple of the cheap ones on amazon they seem to work fairly well except when the game is moving quickly ,for under $80.00 they are a bargain.

I'd check what brand the Patriots use in the visitors locker room. It seems to have served them well for years.

Thanks all for your input, it seems this issue has been resolved by Jules n Grumpy who had a very nice one laying around that they weren't using....I don't know much about these things @ all but thought Bushnell was a good one and this appears to be one of their nicer ones. Mod # 119937 w/ a 7 mp camera and built in animal calls.

Thanks Again to the Ladies of Moose Manor, we very Much enjoyed our short but sweet visit and look forward to the next time.

Just to help avoid some rookie mistakes, I'll give some pointers. (I learned by doing all of these myself)

Mount the camera about waist high pointed slightly down. You can use a stick at the top to get your angle.

Avoid facing east or west if possible. The direct sun makes pictures hard to see

Cut any small limbs within a 20 yard radius. The wind will blow leaves setting off the camera.

Have fun buddy. I have a nice 10 pt on camera that Ocho has called "Dibs"
