I would have given him another year or even let him finish out his contract. They have little to no chance at getting a top Head Coach candidate with no QB and a bad defense. Should have made him the sacrificial lamb while compiling draft picks to rebuild. Would have just took some power from him but still let him feel like he had it all. That is the way of the Eagles though always letting the fans make the big decisions like letting Andy Reid go who is going to the playoffs this year with a team that lost Jamal Charles. They seem to want to follow the Browns path instead of New England or New Orleans, or even the Giants all Super Bowl winners with current coaches and only New England really hasn't had a bad year.

Andy Reid was with the Eagles for 14 seasons. Fans wanted him gone as early as 2005-06 and Lurie stuck with his guy for five more seasons. He was dismissed after a 4-12 season with an 8-8 season the year before. I think Reid is a good coach and fully expected him to have some success elsewhere but it was time for both he and the Eagles to move on. Fans wanted the Eagles to select Ricky Williams with their 1st round pick in the 1999 Draft but the Eagles wisely ignored the fans pleas and drafted McNabb who became the best QB in franchise history. Many fans also wanted the Eagles to get rid of McNabb and keep TO after they had a falling out during the season after their SB appearance against the Pats. So this idea that the Eagles franchise has a history of bowing to the whims of its fan base doesn't really have merit. If anything the firing of Chip this early has been a departure from the way the Eagles have traditionally done business.

My feelings are that the Eagles were going to be in a rebuilding process this offseason regardless of whether they kept Chip or let him go. They don't have a franchise QB. Their OL needs to be rebuilt. Their WR corps is laughable. There are too many issues that need to be addressed with this team that was not going to happen in one offseason. Also I don't think it was just personnel decisions made by Chip that ultimately made the Eagles worse. His system is fundamentally flawed at the NFL level. I also disagree that they don't have any chance to get a top HC candidate. Lets face it the teams that will be firing their coaches come Monday morning and this offseason have there own issues that will need to be addressed as well. While not unheard of its very rare for coaches to just walk into a great situation with a team that needs very little adjustment to be successful.

I'll agree with your 2nd paragraph.

If they hire Jon Gruden then I'm done with being a lifelong Eagles fan.

I think that you named 3 instances in a what a 15 year time period and one of them can be said that proves my point. For 5 years and I doubt it was that long maybe 2-3 years the fans asked to get rid of Reid and each year the rumblings grew louder and louder. Andy Reid took that team to 4 straight NFC championships and a Super Bowl that guy deserved to walk away when he wanted to not by getting fired after 1 losing season.

I agree with Chip's system being flawed for the NFL I mean look at his history in Oregon and any team that lined up and played smash mouth defense they struggled with and almost every team in the NFL is capable of that. However there is little to no chance they get a guy like Adam Gase to come to Philly with no QB and no prospect at QB even if there are little opportunity for new coach to walk into a good situation. Tennessee for one has a QB prospect and will probably get the best HC prospect out there. That is just one team that needs a coach already that ranks above the Philly job.

DMV I don't think Gruden will ever coach again plus he has something Eagles fans don't a big fat ring.

But it wasn't just one losing season that Reid was fired after. They were a .500 team the year before and missed the playoffs and the two years before that they made the playoffs they lost in the Divisional round. They weren't trending in the right direction and Reid had his fingerprints all over those recent drafts and personnel decisions at the time of his dismissal. Again the 4 NFC Championship games and 1 SB was nice but it was even more proof that Reid was a very good but not great coach that was incapable of getting them over the top. He wasn't fired because the fans got on Lurie, he was fired because his time in Philly had run its course and it was time to move in a new direction.

There are plenty of quality coaches and coordinators available for the Eagles to select. Since you are so high on Reid lets remember that when he was hired as the Eagles head coach he was not one of the big names out there. In fact its another example where the ownership and front office ignored the fan base and made an outside of the box hire in Reid who had never even had experience as an offensive coordinator in the NFL.

Reid had big Problems with his family and lost a son.. The fact that he coached a insignificant game the day after his son died would have me questioning whether he needed to be let go for his own damned good..

Since when is .500 a losing record and how many teams win a super bowl per year? Philly fans think they are entitled to a super bowl just because for some reason. In the history of the NFL there has only been 49 Super Bowl winners but yet getting there is just not enough. This is why I never understand why they think they are the best fans when they really on care about winning and bitching about whose fault it is they lost. Enjoy the game it is much more then wins and losses and super bowls are not deserved but earned.

Reid was a Holmgrem guy and that is why he got hired pretty much like how the assistant coaches on the Pats are constantly getting hired and interviewed. Also it was a large reason why Reid got fired because the fans could not stop asking for it.

I'm not saying a .500 record is a losing season. I'm saying that I disagree that one losing season was the reason for Reid's firing. Reid had a couple missed playoffs/losing seasons mixed in his 14 seasons in Philly and early in his tenure he was able to rebound and get the team back in contention. The difference between then and the time he was fired was the last 4 years of his tenure showed undeniable regression. The lost back to back years in the 1st round of the playoffs, then missed the playoffs with a .500 record, and then had a terrible year going 4-12 in his last season. While I am appreciative of what he had done in the past with the NFC Championship appearances and SB appearance it was clear at that point the organization needed to move on and take a chance with someone else.

Look at the Buccaneers and Tony Dungy. Dungy was a very good coach and had some success in TB. In fact he was fired even though his teams made the playoffs in each of his last 3 seasons. They hired Gruden and won the SB the very next year. Would Dungy have won that SB if the Buccaneers kept him? Maybe yes, maybe no. Would the Buccaneers have been more successful for a longer period of time if they kept Dungy instead of hiring Gruden? Same answer. Maybe yes, maybe no. There are no certainties in the NFL and the grass isn't always greener on the other side but at some point you can't use past successes to justify keeping a coach when recent history has shown the team is moving in the wrong direction.
